About Kristen Schmidt

It’s time to give a Schmidt about editing. About telling your story to your audience in the voice and with the words you keep reaching for but can’t seem to achieve on your own. I’ll be your coach along the way, asking a lot of questions and giving you the tools you need to get there without me next time. (Even though I hope we’ll stay in touch and find new reasons to work together again.)I’ve been a library card-carrying word nerd just about my entire life. I channeled all that reading and writing into a career in journalism, working for newspapers and then magazines. (As a new graduate, I thought reporting gigs would support my real passion—creative writing. Hasn’t worked out that way so far.) I found my strength as an editor, working one-on-one with writers and other editors to shape stories and publications through lots of brainstorming, questioning, sketching and then producing, managing a complex process that would ideally surprise, delight, empower, and educate readers. It’s so much more than commas and capital letters! In my practice at Wordschmidt Consulting, editing is:➚ Coaching clients through complicated questions and challenges to arrive at a cohesive, honest, genuine document or project. If it can be communicated, it should be edited.➚ Defining and refining the goals of a project, committing to those goals, and then shepherding the project through so that it meets the goals and doesn’t stray too far outside the bounds.➚ Creating an enjoyable user experience through writing, formatting, word volume, pace, and other devices.➚ Advocating for the client as well as the reader or user of a document, story or project, through a tactful balance of constructive criticism and language choices.MY GUIDING PRINCIPLES➚ Integrity: I answer your questions honestly, even when they make me less likely to win your business. You deserve the consultant who is the best fit for you, not the person who is the best pretender.➚ Empathy: I do my utmost to step outside my perspective and lens and understand the world through your experience.➚ Inclusivity and Accessibility: I gently and firmly challenge written and spoken language and practices that harm, exclude, belittle, or “other” people.➚ Transparency: I disclose all potential conflicts of interest, relationships and other information that could expose me to bias.➚ Respect: There is no single way to achieve a goal. I value your vision and support your path. Dignity exists in work defined in any and every way.

  • Dispatch Media Group
    Editor, Columbus Alive
Dispatch Media Group Sep 2015 - Apr 2016
    Columbus, Oh, Us
Following an ownership change at the at the Dispatch Printing Co. and the hiring of a new publisher for the magazines group, I accepted an assignment to lead Columbus Alive, which had been without an editor for a few months, for the second time. During my eight-month encore stint at Alive, I focused on shoring up our fundamentals — editorial budgeting, planning, editing, proofing and timely production — while starting the work of imagining the next iteration of this 40-year-old brand.
  • Dispatch Media Group
    Editor, Columbus Monthly
Dispatch Media Group Sep 2012 - Sep 2015
    Columbus, Oh, Us
Columbus Monthly underwent transformative changes during my three years as editor. I led the magazine's 10-person staff through a year-long process of questioning and challenging everything about the institution, including its mission, staff structure, visual identity, sections, editorial calendar, website and social media. This painstaking process was undertaken equally among partners in editorial, advertising, marketing and circulation to ensure a successful relaunch and appeal to our core demographic while simultaneously welcoming a new audience to Columbus' city magazine. We produced this magazine with deep pride every month, carefully honing our front-of-book sections, features well, service packages and dining section to be indigenous (to borrow a great term from former Los Angeles Magazine editor Mary Melton) to Columbus alone. The long-term response to our changes was fantastic. Subscriptions and single-copy sales grew. Columbus Monthly was placed in new, audience-appropriate single-copy locations. And a closer partnership with sister publications Columbus Crave and Columbus Monthly Home & Garden only further bolstered Columbus Monthly's already stellar reputation in this competitive market. With a scrappy staff and a growing magazine, I was able to take on writing assignments each month in addition to my editing duties. These opportunities were creative zaps for me, whether I was writing about restaurants, arts and culture or editing one of our marquee service packages. A feature I wrote about the city of Whitehall and its struggles to return to postwar prosperity won a statewide award.
  • Dispatch Media Group
    Editor, Columbus Alive
Dispatch Media Group Apr 2011 - Sep 2012
    Columbus, Oh, Us
So much work never seemed like so much fun. The weekly rodeo ride that was making Columbus Alive was an unforgettable experience, in large part because of the people who were making the magazine and its heavily visited website and social media channels. We loved the city fiercely, stayed on top of its ever-changing music, arts, dining and cultural scenes. We had the power to place a big spotlight on inspiring people who were just as in love with Columbus as we were. We drank the cocktails, the beer, the coffee. We went to shows big and small. We ate fancy sushi and cheap, greasy lunch eats. We craved the latest creations by Columbus' artists and crafters. But the best part was sharing all of this with readers every week.I led the magazine through a redesign, primarily updating sections, refreshing the visual identity and redesigning the website. But the most important and fulfilling part of my job was to help writers, editors, photographers and designers make the most of their considerable talents. That was a thrill and a privilege every week.
  • Whole Foods Market
    Prepared Foods Team Member
Whole Foods Market Jul 2010 - Apr 2011
    Austin, Tx, Us
This multi-tasking position required me to use not only culinary and sanitation skills, but also to respond quickly to unexpected changes and to be efficient with resources and time. I worked with virtually every common protein (and a few uncommon ones), as well as a wide variety of grains, vegetables and sauces. The job gave me skills and experience with every piece of equipment common to commercial kitchens. My work continues to reflect Whole Foods Market's emphasis on customer delight.
  • Red Light
    Line Cook
    Red Light Feb 2010 - Jul 2010
    Bristol, Gb
Working under Executive Chef Jackie Shen, I worked with a range of proteins and cooking techniques on the garde manger, fry and saute stations at this high-volume pan-Asian restaurant. Entrees included pan-roasted pork tenderloin, deep-fried whole catfish and pan-seared scallops. I also became one of many cooks who over the years have prepared Chef Shen's famous Chocolate Bag dessert. At Red Light, I learned the true meaning of hard work and gained invaluable insight into the physical and mental demands of the restaurant industry.
