About Kristen Hazard

I am a problem-solver who loves to build things. My passion and skills as a software developer inevitably lead me toward building solutions. At Wildnote, I am on a mission to create the best tools out there to continually bend the arc of environmental data management towards efficiency and effectiveness. I want people to have the tools they need to make the best possible decisions for the planet. What is possible? What is needed? What is underutilized or undiscovered? Where can we collaborate? Who are the experts that can help guide development? After earning degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Law, I became fascinated by the challenges of Silicon Valley startups and programing. I began to invest my time bridging the gap between what people wanted and the code that created it and started developing software solutions. In 2008, I built my first company, Suntoucher LLC., specializing in web and mobile applications to serve project managers and field staff. Along the way I also became a partner in an environmental consulting firm. This is where the prototype of the Wildnote app was born. It was clear to me that environmental compliance could benefit tremendously from using technology to improve data collection and reporting workflows. At Wildnote we rely on 20 years of agile development experience, expert industry guidance, meaningful user feedback, and a stellar team, to deliver a software experience that saves clients time, money and frustration when collecting, managing, and reporting environmental data. After earning degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Law, I became fascinated by the challenges of Silicon Valley startup and programing. I began to invest my time bridging the gap between what people wanted and the code that created it. Along the way, I found agile practices and Ruby which we combined to create joyful applications for all Suntoucher's clients. Aside from my programming passions, I also enjoy jazz, yoga, financially supporting the fight for our environment through 1% for the Planet movement, and empowering women through free JavaScript trainings with CodeSLO.

I took on a 6 month contracting gig with dot429.com. Our task was to migrate an existing proof of concept application built in Drupal to a more full featured application with a much better design and UX into Rails. dot429.com is essentially a professional networking application focused on the GLTA community, the LinkedIn for gays. At dot429 we worked in an agile environment, meaning we delivered code continuously, that code was tested on our dev machines immediately by using autotest and all code checkins were tested on a continuous integration server using Hudson (now Jenkins). If all tests passed the build was pushed to our staging server where our project management could review immediately and we could iterate from there. We used RSpec and Cucumber as our testing frameworks.
