I am a lifelong learner and strong supporter of public education. My philosophy, simply put, is that every child can learn and demonstrate growth. Every teacher has the moral and professional obligation to teach students in a diversified way which will allow them to maximize their academic and social potential. In the twelve years I have worked in public education, I have had the privilege of working with students who are at risk. The greatest challenge and reward is recovering those students and helping them become positive, contributing members of their school and community. Experience has taught me that students who "hate school" come from homes where an education is not endorsed because of negative experiences in the past; either by the parent, the student, or both. One of my greatest strengths is the ability to recover and strengthen these relationships. As an educator for at risk youth, and later high school students, I believe that the best way to ensure success for every student is a positive atmosphere built on mutual respect and trust. In terms of "at risk" students, I am a firm believer in a "wrap around approach" to ensure their success. As I am gathering leadership experience, I have found the following to be true about myself: I believe using best instructional practices which are supported by data, differentiation when appropriate, and collaborative planning at the grade and department levels. I support meaningful professional development and teacher empowerment. I believe the best leaders lead by example. Therefore I think it is paramount to clearly state expectations, teach them when necessary, be as consistent as possible, and establish a strong rapport with all stake holders. Doing so attracts and helps retain teachers committed to student success.
