As a Senior Systems Engineer I gained more responsibility and autonomy. In this role I continued to work on leadless pacemakers as well as the Azure pacemaker device family, focusing on the MyCareLink-Heart application. Remote monitoring was a new space for me, but I was surrounded by incredible engineers who taught and mentored me along the way. I led Alpha and Beta testing for preliminary versions of the application and was the main engineering contact during the app’s Limited Release Evaluation. I helped customers and patients set up the app and connect to their pacemaker as needed. I led training for our internal teams, as this was a new way of remote monitoring for our business. MyCareLink-Heart has revolutionized the way we monitor our patients and I am proud to have been part of that development.

In this role I primarily worked on Micra AV, Medtronic’s second-generation leadless pacemaker. I was involved in early development, pre-clinical studies, technical reviews, and tool development. This program showed me the importance of cross-collaboration, new ideas, and diverse team perspective. I executed Verification and Validation for the sensing algorithm in preparation for our first download study, MARVEL (Micra Atrial TRacking Using A Ventricular AccELerometer). I had the incredible opportunity to support the first MARVEL downloads at Institut Jantung Negara in Malaysia.

As an Associate Systems Engineer, I supported pacemaker programs in our Cardiac Rhythm and Heart Failure Management business. I partnered with senior engineers to learn the technical content and development processes. I was involved in direct test, formal documentation, pre-clinical studies, and brainstorming sessions.

Throughout my summer internship at Medtronic, I analyzed clinical data for the Micra Transcatheter Pacing System. This device is the world's smallest pacemaker, and is currently undergoing clinical trials. Due to confidentiality, results will not be shared but general processes will. This summer I had three main objectives: 1) Using 24 hour count data from Holters, I assessed the rate profile optimization (RPO) operation. I compared the RPO setpoints to the manual setpoints to ensure the function was working properly. I compared MPREP treadmill results between RPO and manual settings to confirm linearity with workload. 2) I adapted a MATLAB longevity model to estimate the longevity for the CE Mark cohort. These findings were presented at a campus-wide intern fair. 3) I aided Micra clinical specialists in the review of threshold strips and data entry into the clinical database. This work was done to ensure the primary FDA efficacy objective will be met. Along with these three main objectives, I observed Micra second generation animal and cadaver work weekly. In July, I successfully implanted a cadaver with a first generation Micra. This internship gave me a first-hand view of device research, initial clinical trials, data analysis, and database entry.
