The Hazardous Waste Management Program (LHWMP) aims to protect human health and the environment by reducing the threat posed by the production, use, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. I provide social research support for community and business outreach as well as product stewardship efforts. I designed and taught courses in organizational communication, communication theory, critical thinking, public speaking, writing, and crisis and emergency risk communication. I created real-world, hands-on projects to show students how to transfer their classroom learning experiences to the workplace. For example, in my crisis and emergency risk communication class, students created a crisis communication plan for an organization they are interested in working for in the future.

Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Cancer Control and Prevention SectionI was the senior researcher leading a team of six people to develop a communication plan. First, I conducted a communication audit of internal and external stakeholders using observation, interviews and surveys. After analyzing the results, I developed an external communication plan to increase the effectiveness of communication efforts. Finally, I designed a training program to inform employees about communication strategies they could use to inform the public about cancer-related issues and resources in the community.Ernst & Young Communication CenterMy goal was to prepare masters students in accounting for business communication excellence. I developed and implemented five professional development workshops focusing on topics such as business etiquette, business speaking, and business writing. I conducted 200 one-on-one and group consultations to improve students' interviewing, networking, public speaking, and business writing skills. I also critiqued resumes and cover letters.Michigan State University Counseling CenterMy team was charged with increasing mental health help-seeking among college freshmen and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. We conducted eight focus groups and survey research to inform the development and implementation of a mental health help-seeking campaign. Following the campaign discussion about mental health increased by 28%.

My focus as a research assistant was to work on grant funded projects aimed at increasing the health and well-being of the community. I identified, applied for, and worked on university, local, and federal grant projects ranging from $1,000-$62,000. I also worked on the development, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of results for eleven applied research projects. These projects explored effective communication strategies for health campaigns, emergency preparedness, and organizations in crisis. The results of these projects have been published in journal articles, presented at professional conferences, and shared with the funding agencies. I learned how to moderate focus groups, conduct survey research and interviews, and evaluate projects and campaigns using quantitative measurement.As a teaching assistant, I designed and taught courses in organizational communication, business and public speaking, health and political communication campaigns, research strategies, business leadership, and crisis communication. My goal as an instructor was to create an interactive class experience where students could see how the course material related to their lives outside of the classroom.
