DirectorSouth Sound Antiracist Project Aug 2019 - Aug 2023I started the South Sound Anti Racist Project in August 2019 in response to a growing feeling that I wasn't doing enough and that others like me ALSO weren't doing enough, amplified by the ubiquitous voice of Ibram Kendi, who was on tour for his new book: "How to Be an Antiracist." I envisioned the group as an active community of white people who are committed to understanding, adopting, employing and promoting anti-racist ideas, policies and actions in all their spheres of influence. Why white people? We need to catch up to the conversation and engagement about racism in this country and we don't want to rely on people of color to explain it to us. When COVID revealed some of our country's deep racial disparities and then George Floyd was murdered, we saw more and more white people showing an interest in our group. We have an active private Facebook profile (just ask to join and agree to the rules of engagement), and we now meet monthly via Zoom to 1) learn and educate ourselves, 2) support and hold each other accountable, 3) connect with our community and build relationships with others who are already doing this work, and 4) engage and act with eyes on change. We explore a different topic (... + racism) every two months. For instance: criminal justice transformation, redlining and real estate, homelessness, legislation, education, climate and health. We sometimes invite local experts and panels to speak with us and we discuss our monthly study guides (articles, books, podcasts, documentaries...) each month to continue our learning. We just formed four action groups through which we are connecting with our community and building relationships around Tacoma's criminal justice transformation, Pierce County's law and justice review, kids and education, and voting rights and legislation. We meet on the 4th Thursdays of each month (3d Thursdays in November and December) and Zoom links can be found on our FB page or by emailing southsoundantiracist@gmail.com.
