During my command, my ship and crew completed more than 4,000 patrol hours in support of counter drug, alien migrant interdiction, recreational boating safety, and search and rescue operations, including in adverse weather conditions and/or at night. I led my crew in conducting multiple high-visibility search and rescue missions, including saving four people from a sinking boat. Highlights included:• Spearheaded interdiction of a drug smuggling vessel, capturing three drug traffickers and seizing more than 2,500 lbs. of marijuana with an estimated street value of $2.3M. Commended in writing by a USCG senior officer.• Led my ship in a major North American Security Initiative joint exercise with Canadian and Mexican Navies.• Awarded USCG Commendation Medal for outstanding performance and exceptional competence. • The Coast Guard selected my ship to represent the Service in appearances on several major prime time network television shows, including “NCIS,” “Castle,” and “Scorpion.” I represented the Coast Guard in an interview on local news. -
Executive OfficerU.S. Coast Guard Apr 2012 - May 2013Manama, Bahrain (Uscgc Maui)As the second-in-command on a US Coast Guard Cutter forward-deployed in the Persian Gulf in support of US forces in the Middle East, I meticulously coordinated and oversaw all daily operations for, and ensured the daily welfare of, a team of 22 sailors in a highly dynamic, high-threat environment. I planned and implemented numerous exercises and training programs to improve crew skills and readiness, managed all human resource requirements for our crew, and developed and presented solutions to the Commanding Officer for improving our working environment and team spirit. As a member of the Leadership & Diversity advisory board, I shaped and guided implementation of initiatives designed to boost crew cohesion and performance.Highlights included:• Coordinated with local and regional partners during 10 international and joint-service naval exercises in the Gulf.• Led multiple intercepts and 30 high-risk boardings of foreign vessels in support of the multinational task force in the Gulf.• Regularly analyzed and briefed senior leaders on multiple maritime threats, issues, and trends in the Persian Gulf.• Successfully managed and resolved numerous situations involving distressed crew members.• Led measured, effective crew response during repeated high-stress encounters with Iranian fast-attack boats.• Awarded USCG Commendation Medal for outstanding achievement and exceptional leadership. -
Deck Watch OfficerU.S. Coast Guard Jun 2010 - Apr 2012St. Petersburg, Florida (Uscgc Resolute)I performed essential support, logistics, food service, and supply coordination and procurement duties for a USCG cutter with a crew of 78 during five deployments in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. During my first tour of duty with the Coast Guard, I drove multiple ship-wide procedural improvements, implemented effective crew training programs, and managed and administered a $500K annual budget.Highlights included:• Demonstrated leadership and stamina by managing all logistics, transportation, and accommodations needs for the Task Force Commander, his staff, and members of the national media for 45 days when RESOLUTE served as an on-site USGC Task Force Command Post during the high-profile 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill and response effort in the Gulf of Mexico. • Demonstrated strong technical and leadership skills by directing 250 helicopter flights during successful alien migrant interdiction and search & rescue missions in restricted waters off Haiti, including rescue of 47 migrants from a sinking ship.• Commanded the cutter during a joint counter drug mission with Customs and Border Patrol in waters off Puerto Rico that chased and interdicted a boat with two Dominican drug smugglers and 165 kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated $4.5M.• Awarded USCG Achievement Medal for outstanding achievement and exceptional leadership.
