Growing up, I spent almost every summer up to my elbows in the mud of coastal wetlands in Mississippi and Alabama. I always thought I would be a marine biologist, but I found I loved people's histories and stories of their lives at least as much as the mud that gives so much life on the coast. Looking back, it's unsurprising that I would end up cultivating broad interests to encapsulate all that drives me. As an historian, honors faculty member, and higher education scholar-practitioner working to advance community and civic engagement, my focus has always been on leading higher education & communities toward a more equitable future.My passion for people's histories and stories has persisted through the years and permeates my broadly interdisciplinary background and work experience. Education, after all, is about helping students and colleagues imagine a better future state - and then developing the skills to achieve it. Because we all are at work to build a more sustainable future, those skills often hinge on understanding our past, working toward inclusive excellence and representation, amplifying historically-diminished voices, and understanding how to live more lightly on our small planet.I love making connections - among stories, disciplines, colleagues, teams, students, and mentors - and watching those connections spark people's creative energies. It's as immensely satisfying to watch the moment of understanding cross a crowded survey classroom as it is to see it happen in a 1:1 tutorial, and I will never tire of the moment - or the work done getting there. My specialties include quickly learning new skills and always being up for a challenge or problem that needs solving. I gleefully synthesize disparate data into effective narratives, lead interdisciplinary teams for change, and teach students how to do the same. I am most at ease in a classroom or archive, though I'll happily turn any street corner, prairie, forest - or even wetland - into a place that holds our stories and has much to teach us.

Honors Faculty (Contingent)Johnson County Community College Aug 2020 - PresentOverland Park, Ks, Strasbourg & Paris, FranceDuring the Spring term, I team-teach HON 270 - Honors Forum: The 'Next Flint' is Here - Water, Equity, and US Policy, an interdisciplinary, course-based undergraduate research project introducing students to basic water chemistry and the challenges of water policy, urban disinvestment, and environmental justice. Though we use Anna Clark's "The Poisoned City: Flint's Water and the American Urban Tragedy," and Clark joins our class for final project presentations, the course focuses the local community by examining water health and environmental justice concerns in the Kansas City metro area.During the Fall term, I team-teach HON 270 - Honors Forum: Material Cultures, an interdisciplinary course focused on solving a problem of the campus’ material culture as identified by the students. The project-based course generates research-informed, student-developed and -evaluated recommendations for campus practices and procedures, several of which have been implemented.Beginning in Spring and Summer 2023, I team taught HON 250 and GIST 101 - Breaking Cultural Concepts To Find Yourself in the World, an interdisciplinary cultural studies course focused on developing students' cultural competency and intercultural awareness. 8 weeks were hybrid in Kansas; 2 weeks were face-to-face in Strasbourg and Paris. -

These students faced some sort of financial and/or social burden to academic success and job placement, and who met certain needs-based criteria, including service-related TBI or PTSD diagnosis. I worked with these students, providing intrusive academic advising; with business owners and faculty to improve success rates; and with employers to find jobs after matriculation. Maintained 99% placement and success rate for employment and credential completion. -
Sustainability ContactKctcs Dec 2008 - Sep 2013Hopkinsville, KentuckyIn addition to my regular full-time duties, I worked to advance sustainability at Hopkinsville Community College, a multi-campus location within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. We served approximately 3,000 students each semester, with between 250 and 320 employees (including adjunct faculty). In 2009, I led the committee in creating a college-wide sustainability plan, authoring the bulk of that document. In the years following, we implemented a number of the changes proposed there. During 2010, I served as Phi Theta Kappa Advisor to the Delta Gamma chapter and encouraged members of the honors society to participate in and devise events promoting social justice - food drives and service-learning presentations on nutrition at shelters, among others. During 2011, I became co-chair and one of the college’s contacts for our system-level board of regents, providing information on academic offerings, student efforts, and operational successes to that body every six months. I regularly prepared and led professional development sessions for faculty; cooperated with our System staff to draft new 2+2 degree plans with a focus on sustainability; and worked on many revisions of our plan to bring it into closer alignment with AASHE (The American Association for Sustainability in Higher) guidelines. Finally, in March 2013, I completed the STARS review for HCC, making it the first campus in the KCTCS system (and one of the southernmost community colleges in the nation) to be rated by AASHE. -
