A budget of €135 million is available, of which 95 million is through external funds. It worked on 152 scientific projects in 2023, in cooperation with more than 40 universities (and/or university hospitals, most of them foreign universities within the EU), about 20 scientific institutes (mainly international) and more than 60 public organisations (national or European). It is a real honor that I was recently elected as new Chairman of the Scientific Board of Sciensano. Sciensano can count on more than 700 staff members who commit themselves, day after day, to achieve our motto: Healthy all life long.As the name suggests, science and health are central to the mission. Sciensano’s strength and uniqueness lie within the holistic and multidisciplinary approach to health. More particularly we focus on the close and indissoluble interconnection between human and animal health and their environment (the “One health” concept). By combining different research perspectives within this framework, Sciensano contributes in its unique way to everybody’s health. For this, Sciensano builds on the more than 100 years of scientific expertise of the former Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre (CODA-CERVA) and the ex-Scientific Institute of Public Health (WIV-ISP).

I teach Quality Management & Policy in Healthcare within the Department of Public Health & Primary Care, Faculty of Medicine, KULeuven. I am member of a health services research group and study general issues in quality management. The improvement of care processes and the support of clinicians involved in adverse events are two of my research topics. Combining teaching, research and support to society is only possible because of the daily support I receive from a group of enthousiastic research fellows, PhD candidates and post-docs!

The Western Norway Research Network on Integrated Care performs research on the collaboration between primary and secondary care. The Care Pathway methodology is chosen as one of the main drivers. Several research fellows are preparing a PhD on quality and collaboration in healthcare, including a study on Mental Health pathways and a study on the validation of the Norwegian version of the Care Process Self Evaluation Tool.
