Presentation of Research As a Master’s candidate at the School of Architecture and Planning, I have been involved in both academic research and project collaboration. My research has focused on the intersection of design and technology. Specifically, I have tried to answer the question: can the machine be applied to architecture and design while still capturing the craft and art of creation? With this lens, my research began with the influence of the machine and its origins in the Industrial Revolution to the present and the exciting possibilities being explored in digital fabrication. My studies moved beyond the academic into application and I have actively participated in the conversation surrounding the advancement of building energy technology and the application of fabrication technology. I was a member of the aSUNm Solar Decathlon team and worked on the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 submission. My involvement with aSUNm furthered my interest in the integration of sustainable technologies in building systems. It was also during this time that I travelled to China as an aSUNm representative to view the Solar Decathlon China competition; I saw firsthand the strengths and weaknesses of cutting edge technological advancements in materials and construction methods being applied internationally. Architecture continually informs and is informed by its modes of representation and construction. This is particularly true in the present, when digital media and emerging technologies are rapidly expanding what we conceive to be formally, spatially, and materially possible.
