User Services Technician
After working with the Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society (RISLUS) team as a research assistant, I now work with the RISLUS team to support administrators of the Multilingual Literacy SIFE Screener (MLS). The MLS test evaluates newcomer students in New York State on literacy, math and vocabulary in their home language. My role is to answer technical questions from teachers and test proctors, identify and coordinate quality control fixes and develop teacher-facing materials.
Research Assistant
I am working with the Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society (RISLUS) team to track and document internal processes, through their annual reports and project management platform. Together we have updated the RISLUS and Second Language Acquisition Lab (SLAL) websites. Using my research of their project development, I have drafted and edited content for their websites. Part of my work is testing their Multilingual Literacy SIFE Screener (MLS) student literacy tests for quality control.
Multimedia Reporter
I worked as a reporter for the The Fort Morgan Times, a daily newspaper, the Brush News-Tribune, a weekly newspaper, and for a weekly 'Brush Beet' paper highlighting a Brush resident with a one to two thousand word article on their life in the city.Technically, my 'beat' included the city and county government in Morgan County, local business, health and agriculture, among others. However, my work covered whatever happened in the county, from the appearance of a gaggle of geese at a local pond to a high school athlete signing onto a prestigious university. I wrote one to two articles a day, on a slow day, for our six-days-a-week news. Later during my time with the paper, I began regularly editing and building several newspapers per week. This position was a lesson in developing sources, understanding the workings of city and county government and asking questions about what is 'newsworthy' for Morgan County. I've learned to prioritize my work for our tight daily deadlines, to ask questions of everyone - from the mayor to surveyor - and to process complex information into straightforward, relatable articles.
Front Desk Staff
I managed the front desk at Ferriter Scobbo & Rodophele, PC for almost two months as a temporary placement. I connected to F, S & R through Beacon Hill Staffing. At the front desk, I managed the phone lines, directed visitors and callers to the appropriate staff member and organized files, among other administrative tasks. I also took on the task of summarizing and labelling hundreds of saved email communications, as part of their existing communication records system. Though I only worked there for a couple of months, I got to know the office and fellow staff well. As I adopted their system quickly, I received positive feedback that I helped ease their transition as they sought out a long-term front desk staff person.
American India Foundation Clinton Fellow
Through the AIF Clinton Fellowship program, I spent ten months filming and telling the stories of fair trade across India. After several weeks of training with fair trade media organization Fair Trade Connection, I had my first site visit at Literacy India, a Fair Trade Organization (FTO) based in Gurgaon, Haryana, south of Delhi. At each site, all members of Fair Trade Forum - India, I interviewed artisans, managers, and founders, photograph and film through the FTO. Following each visit, I edited the content and create visual marketing material for the organization, including photos, short videos, and case studies. I collaborated with five of our member organizations, where I conducted 47 interviews, produced 28 marketing videos, and shot and edited more than 300 photographs.
