When I first joined the Sheraton Corporation as the Area Director of HR for their Los Angeles properties, Karl was the Hotel Manager at the Huntington Sheraton in Pasadena, CA. He reported to my primary Operations Business Partner, Dennis McDowell - Area VP. The Huntington was a well established property located in an established and affluent area. It catered to an exclusive clientele who were very particular about the levels of quality and service they expected. This was especially true in the Banquet and Catering areas. The Huntington was the scene of many exclusive social events and these required a high degree of function coordination, menu planning, food preparation, and service execution. Karl's understanding of both F&B and Operations along with his caring, professional, and outgoing demeanor enabled him to not only meet the expectations of a demanding clientele but also gain their trust and ensure their return to the Huntington as their venue of choice. Karl went on to become the Hotel Manager at the Sheraton Boston, the Sheraton Corporation's flagship property, and from there he was promoted to GM at the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, his first of many GM assignments. In 1987, I left Sheraton but, through the years, Karl and I have remained friends. His last GM assignment with the Sheraton group was at the Sheraton Suites Hotel on the Plaza in Kansas City and, since I live near Kansas City, I had the good fortune of being able to visit this property, see Karl and his family, and observe Karl interacting with his hotel team and his guests. What I saw was a consummate professional hotelier and astute business executive who knew the wants and needs of his customer, respected each member of his staff as an individual and, in turn, had their respect.
