My independent line of research has focused on unraveling the intricacies of immune responses to red blood cells (RBCs), effectively bridging the realms of immunology and transfusion medicine into a unified field of study. I have made significant contributions to my field, publishing 45 peer-reviewed manuscripts and three review articles. My findings have been instrumental in uncovering novel insights into the immunological processes underlying autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) and RBC alloimmunization. Furthermore, I have developed and refined innovative methodologies, designed new research tools and reagents, and garnered prestigious accolades, such as the Puget Sound Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40, the AABB Foundation Award for Innovative Research, the Scott Murphy Memorial Lecture, and was recently selected to be inducted into the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) Hall of Fame. I have had the privilege of delivering invited lectures on a national and international scale. Notably, my research has garnered extramural funding, with successful grant applications as a Principal Investigator from the esteemed AABB Foundation, three NIH NHLBI R01s (one is renewal), and a P01 in collaboration with my colleagues at the University of Virginia and Emory University. I have also been a co-Investigator on an additional P01 with colleagues at Yale University and Harvard University. Additionally, my recognition for developing new preclinical models for anti-RBC immune responses has led to sponsored research agreements with biopharmaceutical companies to evaluate novel therapeutics. Moreover, I have expanded the scope of my work beyond RBC-specific antibodies, utilizing the knowledge gained during the COVID-19 pandemic to secure private foundation funding for the study of antibodies in convalescent plasma.
