Krysten Ernst began her career in the electrical industry in 2006 as a junior technologist with Stantec in the newly minted electrical engineering department. Working with a growing team, Krysten had the opportunity to experience different aspects of the consulting engineering world, including drafting, design, construction management and project management. During this time she also developed a passion for lighting design which has influenced much of her career to date.In 2008 she joined the local chapter of the IES and served as Emerging Professionals chair, from there moving into the Vice President and President roles. She currently holds the Education chair position, sharing her knowledge and experience gained after 17 years in the field of lighting.In 2017, Krysten achieved a long-term goal of writing her LC (Lighting Certified) examination and in 2018 was granted LC status. During the course of her career, Krysten has had the opportunity to be involved in many high-profile projects including the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan redevelopment and the Dakota Dunes Hotel on the Whitecap Reserve. One of Krysten’s main beliefs though is that no matter the size or scale of the project, everyone deserves to experience good lighting. Good lighting is necessary for humans not just to survive but to thrive - it affects the way we feel, the way we learn, even the way we see ourselves. Whether she was providing lighting education, design services or even just act as a sounding board for her fellow lighting colleagues, Krysten is always looking for ways to improve the way we think and speak about designing lighting, and to ask the tough questions.
