I taught 7th and 8th grade English at St. Richard's Episcopal School in the heart of Indianapolis. This independent school is dedicated to exploring and studying faith in its many forms, past and present, as supported by the tradition of the Episcopal Church. The preschool-Grade 8 school features a classic curriculum, and teaches civic responsibility, global readiness and leadership. As a freelance journalist, my specialty is narrative nonfiction writing.

I advised FOCUS, the high school newspaper. In my first year at Perry, it was one of 12 finalists for the Hoosier Star among large-school newspapers, which recognizes the best high school newspapers in the state of Indiana. My students won more than 20 writing and design awards. This was a first for the school. It hadn't been honored with awards since it was established in 1973.I also taught journalism, a full-year course that includes law, ethics, research, writing, history and design. Beyond journalism, I taught sophomore English, designing most of my own curriculum and tests to reflect the diversity of our student body. For example, I scoured websites and poetry books to find famous Chin poetry to teach ALL students in grade 10. Our school has about 500 Burmese students, who originally fled to Indianapolis as refugees from the Chin state.

I taught world literature and English 11. I volunteered with the Best Buddies Club as a co-advisor.

I taught reading, language arts and literature. I assisted colleagues in choosing curriculum materials and helped improve a library for this charter school operated by Goodwill Industries.

I taught undergraduate courses -- Multimedia Reporting, Multimedia Writing, Journalistic Storytelling, Media and American Society, News reporting, and News writing. I had a one-year contract through May 2010.

I helped launch an Angie's List monthly medical magazine for Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio markets. I also edited a Quality and Design monthly publication for Indianapolis and the Twin Cities that focuses on home design and decor. I was laid off after the magazines failed to attract enough advertising dollars due to the sluggish economy.

I wrote for many different publications and organizations, including The Boston Globe, Indianapolis Monthly, The Indianapolis Business Journal, Eli Lilly & Co. and Pearson Publishing. I taught at the University of Indianapolis and Ivy Tech Community College.

My responsibilities included helping young people, ages 10-19, edit and write issues for publication in The Indianapolis Star. I traveled with a reporting team of students covering the Republican National Convention in 2008, helping them discover, research and write stories for The Star and radio spots for WFYI Public Radio.
