About Kevin Still

I am a technical leader that enjoys solving complex problems using best practices throughout the AWS ecosystem. Specializing in DevOps, Automation, Architecture, and Platform Engineering. I have a particular interest in leading teams that create the tooling which enables feature teams to decrease time to market, standardizing those applicationsโ€™ infrastructures to be Secure, Reliable, Scalable, Observable, and Maintainable; using the most Cost Effective methodologies. ๐‡๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌโ€ข Architected and reviewed the implementation of Internal Developer Platform tools, using AWS Cloud Development Kit (.NET 6.0) and Atlassian Bamboo, that standardize best practices to reduce complexity and cognitive load on feature teams while "๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜“๐˜ฆ๐˜ง๐˜ต" using GitOps. โ€ข Led the initiative of the migration of companywide microservice architecture from .NET Framework to .NET Core 3.1/.NET 6.0 to a Cloud Native Docker container deployment using: AWS ECS, AWS ECS Fargate, AWS Lambda, AWS API Gateway, AWS Secrets Manager, and AWS CloudWatch, using a mixture of Windows and Linux containers. โ€ข Primary initial point of contact with an incoming team from an acquired technology company to reduce code and infrastructure complexity. This reduced cost when integrating the new technology into existing infrastructure. โ€ข Cultivated the DevOps culture as the company transitioned to Agile. Reduced deployment cycle time from quarterly, complex after-hours deploys to a full CI/CD platform where the company can deploy multiple times a day without fear.โ€ข Defined companywide best practices and was a leader in the migration from monolithic applications to microservice architecture that featured reliability, fault tolerance, and scale. โ€ข Defined, created, led, and architected a team of software engineers that specialized in all things DevOps. โ€ข Responsible for a multi-domain applicationโ€™s Natural Language Processing tooling and FIPS 104 Level 2 Certification. โ€ข Backend Software Engineer working in multiple languages and environments specializing in optimization, threading, and scaling.

The Quality Platform Team will focus on creating tooling, presenting metrics, and increasing observability on all facets of testing. Both teams will work throughout the entire engineering organization to advocate for and document best practices to ensure a comprehensive vision for Engineering at Pie. Simply stated, we want to make Engineering as Easy as Pie!
  • Pie Insurance
    Senior Manager Cloudops Engineering
    Pie Insurance Jun 2022 - Aug 2022
    Denver, Colorado, Us
After joining Pie, I collaborated with leadership to refactor and appropriately scope the context of the work owned by the CloudOps Team. I began the transition of the teamโ€™s mindset and operating philosophy from reactive and operation-based to strategic and proactive by focusing on a developer self-service model and empowering developers through tooling and automation.
  • Babel Street
    Senior Director Software Engineering
    Babel Street Dec 2018 - Jun 2022
    Washington , Dc, Us
As the DevOps practices matured, I redirected the teamโ€™s focus to Internal Developer Platform (IDP) tools that enables the feature teams to seamlessly go from concept to production, while maintaining compliance standards set by cross-functional teams, including Security and IT. The future is bright and Iโ€™m excited to see where our focus of โ€œShift Leftโ€, Automation, and GitOps can take Babel Street. โ€ข As Babel Streetโ€™s queuing demands shift and expand, I architected an IDP tool for developers to create their own custom RabbitMQ cluster using a combination of GitOps and Cloud Development Kit (CDK).โ€ข Architected an IDP tool to reduce the cognitive load on our feature teams that deploys an AWS CloudFormation Stack containing the resources and configuration needed for their AWS ECS services. The DevOps team used feedback from a cross-functional group of stakeholders to create a simple, yet complete, Yaml file that interfaces with the AWS CDK application to generate an AWS Stack for the AWS ECS services. โ€ข Defined the initial standards that were used to create Visual Studio Extension for developers fast-tracking their way to a project that follows best practices for container services.โ€ข Designed and implemented the Build and Deployment pipeline for Docker Containers using AWS Elastic Container Registry (ECR) and AWS ECS. This set the eventual groundwork for the IDP tooling.โ€ข Architected and mentored a transition of Babel Streetโ€™s Babel BOX (On Premise) solution from a cumbersome, complicated multi day on-site deploy to a simplified, standardized Docker Swarm installation using Docker Compose โ€ข Led the initiative to migrate away from Service Fabric to AWSโ€™s ECS as Windows container support matured, gaining better fault tolerance, resource allocation, cost optimization, scalability, standardization, and observability. As .Net evolved, I continued to advocate to support the latest LTS versions to reduce container size, increase throughput, and gain new feature sets.
  • Babel Street
    Senior Software Engineer
    Babel Street Feb 2016 - Dec 2018
    Washington , Dc, Us
As employee 19 at Babel Street, I was a Senior Software Engineer who focused on the core backend services. After a few iterations of development team restructuring, a group of engineers started a nonfeature-based incubation team. As the team became established, I filled the role of (acting) Director. Over time, responsibilities within the team diverged and spawned new teams. The remaining engineersโ€™ primary focus was DevOps. I was responsible for the cultivation of the DevOps culture throughout the entire developer group. I collaborated across teams to identify the needs of Babel Street for continued growth. As services grew in number and complexity, I established standards for a distributed highly available microservice platform using Azure Service Fabric (On Premise). I designed and implemented a system to eliminate what was a quarterly after-hours, all-developer, deployment cycle. Eventually, I lead the team in developing a CI/CD system with integrations for static code analysis tools for security, operation, license compliance, unit testing, and disaster recovery. This system transformed the release cycle and was complementary to the organizationโ€™s shift towards Agile. These changes allowed for multiple deployments per day without fear. With a growing ecosystem of microservices, Babel Street needed a reliable and scalable queuing system. After research, testing, and cost analysis, I created our first highly available RabbitMQ cluster and created a universal NuGet package for developer adaptation. โ€ข Grassroots development of a green-field DevOps team โ€ข Configuration and ownership of Microsoft Team Foundation Server and the migration to Atlassian Bamboo and Bitbucketโ€ข Integrated Synopsis Blackduck and SonarQube to provide feedback on code quality, license, and security compliance โ€ข Defined a transitional pattern from monolithic console applications and TopShelf Services to highly available and reliable microservices
