K Street Studio is my art/writing/programming/media studio/laboratory, a room in my home, a room that is filled with computers, printers, video and still cameras, temperature controllers and related devices, a closet full of electrical components and devices, tools and testers, books, so many books, and more. The work I do there includes technical and creative writing, publishing a newsletter, videography, programming, some web development and occasionally designing and building electrical things. Most of my work is done on my computers, tools I long ago saw as a palette, a tool kit, that one could use to express one's creativity, both artistic and technical. As a freelancer I have been able to indulge my creative passions and create things that are interesting and even useful. Each project I take on is an opportunity to learn and grow in my arts and to produce something that exceeds my clients' expectations. I would go crazy if I had a standard 9-5 job, or any job that just sticks you at a desk. Freelancing is more difficult, and when the assignments come in they consume nearly every waking hour until I have finished the project, but I love it.By the way, typical projects, freelancing and personal, include data acquisition and control of laboratory scale and small industrial processes, instructional videos, motor sports videos along with software that will help make these videos even more interesting, maintaining and racing a car and managing a race team, developing teaching modules for engineers, consulting on and contributing to textbooks and handbooks, and other writing projects.

Owner of the car, captain of the team, head mechanic, and one of the drivers of the Tinyvette, a 1969 orchard-find Opel GT that we revived as a wannabe ALMS Corvette (Corvette Racing) and have campaigned in the 24 Hours of LeMons for four, and now starting five years, during which time we have taken home the Grass Roots Motorsports "Most from the Least" award, two class wins, the coveted IOE, and the not so coveted "We Got Screwed" award. The car is beloved across the country and is known for not just being pretty but also well and very cleanly driven. An C class car but an A class team, as one person put it, and with lap times in the lower third our finishes are in the top 20 and 30 in fields of 130-190 cars, our formula of preparation, execution, and patience is working.

1. Developed the materials science laboratory teaching program, which encompassed developing course materials, instructor materials, the web site, laboratory facilities and equipment, training and supervising teaching assistants, as well as developing and implementing related out reach activities.2. Developed the Materials Science Central Facilities, taking it from one instrument and a half dozen users to a fully equipped characterization facility that supported users from all over campus, provided individualized training for each user on each instrument, and by the end of my time there we had approximately 250 active users. Instruments included high-resolution SEM with EDS and EBSD, TEM with EDS, X-ray powder diffraction, SAXS, x-ray radiography, acoustic microscopy, digital optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, plus all of the support for specimen preparation, including ultra-cryo microtome, TEM specimen preparation metallographic sample preparation, freeze-drying and other techniques for preparing biological samples.
