* Designed and executed 5 different experimental tests and measurements on cold-formed steel hollow sections with various sizes, strength grades and production histories, including: o Tensile tests on 40 coupons extracted from cold-formed steel hollow sections to determine their stress-strain responses. o Geometric imperfection measurements over 6 short steel column samples to determine the magnitude and pattern of initial out-of-flatness. o Compression tests on 24 short… Show more * Designed and executed 5 different experimental tests and measurements on cold-formed steel hollow sections with various sizes, strength grades and production histories, including: o Tensile tests on 40 coupons extracted from cold-formed steel hollow sections to determine their stress-strain responses. o Geometric imperfection measurements over 6 short steel column samples to determine the magnitude and pattern of initial out-of-flatness. o Compression tests on 24 short cold-formed steel columns to obtain the compressive stress- axial strain responses. o Measurement of residual stresses in 14 cold-formed steel specimens using the destructive method of sectioning. o Flexural tests on 22 cold-formed steel beams in a four-point bending configuration to determine the maximum moment and rotation capacities of the specimens. (These tests were performed using the structural testing facilities at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.)* Performed over 1330 parametric finite element analyses on verified beam and column models using ABAQUS nonlinear finite element package.* Proposed modifications to the current steel design rules set out by CSA S16, AISC 360 and AISI S100 for improving accuracy and reliability when applied to direct-formed steel hollow section beams and columns.* These research projects were funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC), the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), The Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS NCE).
