Kristin Tolle, Ph.D. has had a successful career across a broad range of software and data science engineering and research projects, often establishing wholly new strategic research and development initiatives. Dr. Tolle is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the eScience Institute at the University of Washington. Concurrent with teaching Data Science and Machine Learning at UW, she held industry several industry engineering and research positions, most recently a Principal Data Scientist and Program Manager at Grab Technology Services. Prior to that Kristin was the Chief Data Officer in the Tech for Social Impact team in Microsoft Philanthropies and was Director or Program Management in Microsoft’s AI Engineering. During most of her 19-year career at Microsoft, Dr. Tolle worked in Microsoft Research, directing programs in Data Science, Natural User Interactions, and Environmental Science tool development. In all cases, her work centered on Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, big data and their role in science and analysis. Throughout her career, Dr. Tolle’s work has focused on using AI for social justice, protecting the environment, and improving healthcare outcomes. During her tenure at Microsoft Research, she also co-edited and authored one of the earliest books on big data, The Fourth Paradigm: Data Intensive Scientific Discovery.
