Profile bio

About Karl Rosenberg

I received a PhD in computer science (HCI focus) from the New York University Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. My group was the Future Reality Lab and my advisor was Professor Ken Perlin. Check my main portfolio piece I designed and built from-scratch, an intelligent sketching + speaking system for interactive storytelling: "DrawTalking: Building Interactive Worlds by Sketching and Speaking" : https://ktrosenberg.github.io/drawtalking/ — accepted to UIST '24.Also, Please see my projects section for more demos and links. My experience and research combines Human-Computer Interaction and Graphics with a focus on multimodal interaction techniques and experiences. I've explored multimodal interface design, AR, VR, sketching+speech interactions, accessible programming, and others. I work towards a future in which technology extends our creative abilities. My thesis introduces an approach to interactive world-building by drawing and talking out-loud, enabling programming-like capability over your own drawings within a simulated world. The control mechanism emphasizes user-choice and fluidity. It is inspired by explaining at a whiteboard or telling stories, but applied to spontaneous working-out of interactive designs, animations, and gameplay mechanics that you can play with directly, as if by paper-prototyping and narration.I received my bachelor's degree in computer science (with a minor in German Language) from NYU. My most recent projects include an intelligent multimodal sketching system (more on this soon), MetaRoom (a WebXR framework for multiuser VR), and ongoing collaboration on "Chalktalk" (a smart sketching and presentation system featuring a magic blackboard).

Listed skills include Computer Science, Programming, Software Development, Research, and 19 others.

-Collaboration with lab director Ken Perlin on Chalktalk, a tool for live presentation, education, andcommunication – users’ drawings are recognized as interactive 3D animated sketches for the visualizationand demonstration of ideas. Sketches can be linked to form complex systems with different behaviors.-Implementation and prototyping of alternative controls, user-interface improvements, content foranimation, sketch creation, subject-specific visualization libraries (e.g. CS concept sketches)-Key contributions to successful open-source release effort – https://github.com/kenperlin/chalktalk-Collaborator on ongoing project to develop Chalktalk for VR. Chalktalk VR is an extension of Chalktalk into a VR communication and collaboration tool. It features multiple perspective views on content and users. It was published as a SIGCHI 2019 Late Breaking Work and demoed at Oculus Connect 6.-MetaRoom: a WebVR platform in which multiple users can experience and travel between 3D worlds together in a shared physical 1-to-1 space. Worlds can be modified at runtime using connected devices. Currently being developed for a graduate-level computer graphics course.
