About Kunal Sengupta

I manage the query optimization and the openCypher language teams at Amazon Neptune, a graph database service. My teams recently deliver openCypher language support for Neptune along with various performance improvements related to query execution and planning. Before taking up management I led the initial integration of the new DFE query engine for SPARQL query execution. And delivered performance improvements through improvements to the query optimization layer for the SPARQL query engine in Neptune.

As a research assistant I have worked on various research projects. Below are some of the key topics.** Grounded Circumscription for OWLIntroduced a new way of combining open world and closed world ontology modelling for the semantic web. This work is particularly interesting for applications having a domain ontology with data stored in a relational database where certain parts of the knowledge could be assumed to be complete. As a result intuitive facts could be inferred which would otherwise not be the case or may require more convoluted form of modelling when using only open world semantics. As a part of this research work we have also designed and developed an algorithm to perform ontology reasoning based on this semantics. ** A Defeasible Ontology Mapping LanguageWorking towards a robust ontology mapping language to relate concepts from different ontologies. This language is intended to handle the heterogeneity between ontologies by cleverly managing the differences yet retaining the similarities among the concepts that syntactically appear to be the same thing but may have certain subtle semantic differences. To give a simple example consider the concept of marriage it may have small differences in the meaning based on the governing laws of the land where the concept is defined. Existing mapping languages are not equipped to handle such differences and may lead to inconsistent or incomplete knowledge. Initial results of this research has been published in JIST 2014. Current work involves improving the current results and working towards an efficient algorithmization.** Ontology Reasoner implementation (In progress)Developing an efficient reasoner with the capabilities to inference under the semantics of grounded circumscription (theoretical tableau calculus is published in ISWC2011).
  • Siemens Corporate Research
    Research Intern
Siemens Corporate Research Jun 2014 - Aug 2014
During this internship I worked on improving a patent based search system. The tasks involved included applying various text mining approaches (TF-IDF and its variants) to improve keyword extraction and the expansion process for the system. I evaluated the outcome of the extraction and expansion processes using these approaches and designed a combination of techniques to obtain the best results for the extracting keywords from Patents. For keyphrase expansion, I devised an algorithm that would make use of collocation based word similarity and provide expansions for phrases.Technologies involved: Java, Lucene, Apache SOLR
  • Fluid Operations
    Research Intern
    Fluid Operations Jun 2013 - Aug 2013

Developed the first version of R2RML (RDB2RDF) mapping editor for fluid Operations. The editor is first of its kind user interface that enables users to create/manage R2RML mappings. It supports most of the R2RML language features. This work led to a poster and demo presentation at ISWC 2013 with me as the first author. Technologies involved: Semantic Web, Java, Mysql, Sesame api.
