About Kung-Hsien Ho
I study the biology of pancreatic beta cells and how insulin secretion is regulated. Specifically, my research projects focus on understanding microtubule mediated insulin vesicle trafficking/secretion and the coupling of microtubule dynamics to glucose stimulation mediated by tau protein. I am especially interested in the molecular connection between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. I am always interested in understanding the basic science of cells and its potential application to biotechnology and therapeutic initiatives. • Experienced in cross-disciplinary collaboration with research teams of fields including diabetes, cell biology, Tauopathy, proteomics, and computational biology. • Well-trained in biochemical and genetic approaches, cell culture, mouse experiments, high resolution microscopy, and image quantitative analysis. • Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills. • Strong research planning and record keeping discipline. • Passionate about working with inspiring colleagues and finding better solutions to diseases.
Listed skills include Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Cell Culture, and 34 others.

Kung-Hsien Ho work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Scientist Ii
R&D in early discovery. Support lead selection and clinical trails. Develop assays for diabetes research using isolated human pancreatic islets and immortalized human pancreatic cell lines. Focused directions include small molecules induced beta cell proliferation and GLP-1 receptor signaling. Highly experienced confocal microscopist.
Research Instructor
Discovered the novel role of the microtbule minus end-binding protein CAMSAP2 in regulating insulin biosynthesis. Study the Intra-islet GLP-1 receptor signaling that tunes beta cell microtubule remodeling and the dosing of insulin secretion. Train young lab members in animal handling, islet isolation, and experiments using isolated mouse islets. Mannage the mouse colony for the lab.
Lifa Research Fellow
Collaboration with Eli Lilly to study the novel molecular mechanism connecting diabetes and Alzheimer's disease involving tau. Developped the procedure using high resolution confocal microscopy for isolated pancreatic islets to follow microtubule dynamics in individual beta cell in real time. Discovered novel roles of tau in regulating the coupling of glucose stimulation and microtubule dynamics mediated insulin vesicle mobilization.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
My research applies state-of-the-art microscopy, cell biology, and biochemical approaches to diabetes research. I am especially interested in understanding how the microtubule network regulates insulin secretion in pancreatic beta cells. I established a photoconversion imaging system to directly examine microtubule dynamics induced by glucose stimulation in live pancreatic beta cells inside isolated mouse islets. My findings suggest microtubules are critical to beta cell functions by regulating the dosage of insulin to be secreted upon stimulation and basal conditions.
