I can't believe that together with my husband Davy, we set up Defender Bird Spikes over 25 years ago! So much has changed since it began. I mean, we still manufacture the best quality steel and plastic bird spikes in the UK, right here in Devon and supply them all over the world! That hasn't changed, but the way we sell them and connect to our customers has.I admit I came to the pest control industry via knowing Davy, but I really love it now. I have literally worked every position in the company over the years so do know a little bit about everything that goes on!I started as ADMIN in the early days of pre-computers, designing forms using old fashioned pencil, ruler and typex. Mail shots consisted of handwriting thousands of envelopes with addresses taken from the yellow pages. Then I manned the phones as SALES, taking orders from our trade customers. It was very exciting times and we loved every single order we received. For those of you who remember, we used to hide sweets and chocolate bars in the boxes we sent out!Fast forward a couple of years, a couple of children and a couple of moves and we land in Devon. Now I navigated the world of E-COMMERCE - I learnt how to create our own website as apparantly that was the way forward!In lockdown, I ran the WAREHOUSE DESPATCH from contacting courier services, printing off labels, ordering stock, packing boxes and moving pallets. It certainly kept me fit!SOCIAL MEDIA is the big thing at the moment, from making connections on LinkedIn to posting on Facebook and Instagram - huge learning curve! We have had to teach ourselves photography, videography and how to speak in emoji! We try to be informative, friendly, helpful and just a little bit funny, and I think we are getting it just right!
