As Senior Managing Scientist in the Polymer Science and Materials Chemistry practice at Exponent, I provide a wide range of polymer science, surface science, and chemistry expertise to address challenges involving consumer electronics and medical devices, including highly integrated products such as wearable electronics, VR/AR devices, point of care diagnostics, advanced catheter systems, and others. Specifically, I provide polymer chemistry and polymer materials characterization knowledge to support product design and validation, including material selection and testing, biocompatibility assessment of devices in end-use scenarios, and general failure analysis. In addition to product development assistance, I offer a range of scientific due diligence services to support investment decisions, licensing deals, and intellectual property filings related to chemistry, polymers, and biomedical and life sciences.In general, our practice's expertise covers all areas of natural and synthetic polymers, rubbers, adhesives, textiles, coatings, and composite systems and includes a fundamental understanding of all aspects of their chemistry, structure, processing, properties, and uses. • Created a new class of conducting polymers for application in polymer-based solar cells utilizing the copper-catalyzed, azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction (“click chemistry”) developed at Scripps. Collaborated with researchers at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst to evaluate the morphological and photophysical properties of these electroactive materials and incorporated them into photovoltaic devices.• Prepared hybrid synthetic polymer/protein nanoparticles by radial atom transfer polymerization (ATRP) for applications in chemotherapeutic delivery and improved MRI diagnosis.• Collaborated with Scripps researchers to develop regenerative tissue scaffolds using a novel, 3D bioprinting technique. • Research resulted in 6 peer-reviewed publications to date.

• Initiated a new research program to synthesize amphiphilic, polyolefin-based graft copolymers via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of functional cyclooctene monomers and macromonomers. • Created new synthetic strategies to prepare polycyclooctene copolymers bearing poly(ethylene glycol) and oligopeptide side-chains. Prepared hollow polymer capsules by oil-water interfacial assembly and crosslinking for drug delivery applications. Developed new, reactive coatings for commercial water purification membranes.• Research resulted in 10 peer-reviewed publications and 4 U.S. patents.

• Co-founded this company and led the company’s scientific development from concept to an 11-employee corporation including 3 Ph.D. chemists and 3 Ph.D. biologists.• Led four preclinical development programs including polymer micelle-encapsulated iron oxide nanoparticles (MRI contrast agent), small molecule drugs (targeted chemotherapy), amyloid-beta peptides (Alzheimer’s vaccine), and DNA/RNA therapeutics (gene therapy). • Oversaw the implementation of the corporate intellectual property strategy, including patent generation. Developed a patent portfolio consisting of 13 U.S. and international patent families.• Led the company in engaging strategic partners including scientific presentations to potential pharmaceutical partners and academic collaborators.
