CeoCredit Union Of The Rockies Apr 2010 - Oct 2012Golden, Co, UsAssuming leadership of a credit union struggling through the recession; the credit union’s net income had fallen 97% to only $13K in 2009. These struggles were resulting in a reduction of various services and regulatory scrutiny which included a recent CAMEL downgrade. The credit union’s condition can be best summed up in its Bauer Financial rating of 3 (and falling) indicating adequate performance in 2009.In my first year at the credit union net income rebounded to $752K. The following year net income grew to $881K as sales initiatives took hold leading to rapid loan growth. By October 2012 we had $544K; having fallen primarily as a result of the cost of new initiatives we had implemented to restore and improve services. Nevertheless even at this reduced level it was well in excess of the levels before my arrival. The new initiatives included an IT migration and new systems; enhanced training programs; and more.While expenses were controlled turnaround success wasn't achieved traditionally whereby expenses are slashed to the point short term profitability is ensured but long term success suffers. Rather efforts were concentrated on growing profitable areas and exiting areas that were causing out sized losses and not delivering value to existing members. Among those successes were:• Outstanding membership growth; in 2 ½ years since 2010 1,684 net new members versus 529 from 1990 – 2010 excluding membership gains from merger activity.• Net Worth Growth & Income consistently in 90th percentile of PEER credit unions.• 13% average ROE; delivering outstanding returns on the member’s funds entrusted to the credit union.• Bauer Financial rating of 5 the highest rating given to financial institutions indicating superior performance and financial health. -
