About Kurt Sauer

Even though I've been passionate about security and communications since I was quite young, I still find myself excited by contemporary developments in these fields.By the time I graduated from Texas A&M University, I had already become a bonded locksmith, a paramedic, and a reserve deputy sheriff. I'd also dissected a Touch Tone phone and got my first ham radio license. But my intro to software engineering started a lifelong journey with interesting detours that made me who I am today. One of the more exciting developments was in 1979, when I read an article by Marty Hellman in Scientific American, entitled "The Mathematics of Public Key Cryptography". I was too young to understand its implications, but was captivated by the idea of trapdoor functions.A decade later, I was developing Trusted Solaris, a secure operating system by Sun Microsystems that employed that very same encryption technology. Thanks to Sun, I had the chance to travel to many foreign lands and to work full-time as a Principal Architect in its applied research labs in France. When Sun started to break apart, I left to join Skype as one of the original members of the startup: The work was more a matter of aptitude and capacity than of job title -- everyone did whatever was necessary to make the company successful. Although I led Skype's security program from the start, I did a lot of other jobs along the way, too: government relations, patent portfolio manager, M&A diligence, and crisis management, to name a few.Five years at a startup pace is hard to sustain. So I decided to take an educational sabbatical in Japan. After that, I joined PayPal for a six-year run, leading its international InfoSec team out of Tokyo and Singapore.Shortly after returning to the US, I joined Salesforce.com in San Francisco to run their product security, infrastructure security, and M&A security programs. This was an exciting time, as Salesforce really expanded their cloud computing horizons and we rolled out a secure development lifecycle for the enterprise. After a few years at Salesforce, I was lured away to a stint as CISO for a healthcare startup based in New York City. However, I missed warm weather, and after a couple of years returned to California to lead Information Security at Workday, delivering on the company's mission to protect, detect, and defend against intrusions on its information assets. No matter where I go or where I work, my main passion remains squarely in the area of leading and nurturing the next generation of security leaders. What a great journey!
