Karel H.M. Van Wely Email and Phone Number
For those familiar with biomedical research, the "what I do" link under websites will list my publications on pubmed (just forget about any privacy in science...). After studying biomedical sciences at the University of Utrecht, I moved to Groningen to do my thesis research on protein secretion in Bacillus subtilis. After setting up an in vitro system for protein translocation across the membrane of Gram-positive bacteria, the research group set out to study (in-)compatibilities between the E. coli and B. subtilis secretion systems. Next, I moved to Rotterdam (and to mammalian cells) to work as a postdoc at the Erasmus Medical Center. There, I studied the MN1 / MN1TEL oncogene for approximately three years (a decade later, we start to learn what the oncogene does en how).Since 2002, I´ve been working in the National Center for Biotecnology in Madrid (CNB), part of the spanish research council (CSIC). Now, I focus on the role of the cytoskeleton in cell growth and chromosomal instability. I´m a firm believer in multi-facetted approaches to solve biological problems. For this reason, I read some basic stuff on particle physics, give a few lectures on popular science throughout Spain, and help out with some archeology whenever there´s time (and money). As a general goal (for the moment), I´ll settle for trying to solve the everyday puzzles we normally call life. Just finished a third book for the CSIC-Catarate publishers. This one a real colaboration joy with my co-author. Combining writing and lab work however is not always easy, time to get back to the lab bench soon!Specialties: Cell and molecular biology, recombinant proteins, protein-protein interaction, epigenetics, cancer, chromosomal instability, mitosis, transcription, alternative splicing.
