You know, that clunky one that made an appearance at every birthday, holiday or little-league sporting event back in the 90’s. I was probably seven or so when I figured out how to record my first special effect. I watched in amazement as my dad made a stop-motion animation with a Playmobil figure and a little toy car. Record. Stop. Move figure ever so slightly. Record. Stop. Do it again. Record. Stop. Again. I quickly applied the method to “disappearing myself” from the frame and “magically” showing up on the other side of the room. It was the beginning of my allurement to the magic of film. From there, I went on to make LEGO stop-motion animations and Christian-rock-music videos with my lizard puppets. Strange combo... and yes... I'm still weird.Fifteen-plus years later, I’m still here making videos. Just now, it’s my job. Though I would still love to do of those goofy, personal projects, the River of Opportunity has brought me a very different array of video work. I would definitely say that these opportunities have streeeeettttchhhed me to grow into all kinds of arenas and location, location, location! I’ve had the opportunity to make videos all around the world! From San Francisco and Los Angeles to Belgium and Zambia, for trainings and historical content, social media accounts, online courses and education, and the occasional wedding (friends only).As with any job, the work can become a bit grueling. Especially when I’ve been cooped up in the dark, editing cave, working for what feels like an age. My skin begins to pale, my hair starts to fall out in clumps, I gain a terrible hunch in my back and finally, I start to have wicked obsessions with Rings of Power. “Precious.” But, all in all, I’ve never lost the sense of magic that I get when a new idea surfaces or when I get to work in collaboration with others and we finally get to see a vision come to fruition before our eyes. There’s nothing quite like it.
