Alan Stillman is the Founder and CEO of Kwikpoint, based in Alexandria VA. At 24, he was a systems analyst with a degree in math from Cornell University. He had professional and Financial success, yet something was missing.Inspired by a friend, he made a resolution to travel the world by bicycle on a quest for meaning. It was the beginning of a two-and-a-half year, 15,000 mile journey that would take him through 28 countries. Traveling by bicycle through foreign lands, Alan learned much about communication. In each town, whether he spoke the language or not, Alan needed shelter, food, and water. This led to the birth of his idea for a "picture dictionary" to bring people closer together - an idea that would become his lifelong guiding purpose and passion.Sine pictures are quick and people can point to them to express themselves, Alan called his idea Kwikpoint. In 1996, Kwikpoint became a full-time endeavor, and introduced visual language communication products in partnership with AT&T, Visa, United Airlines, AAA, Marriott, and multiple Olympic Games, among others. Three days after September 11, 2001 the company was asked by a Marine Corps Major if Kwikpoints could be modified to include military images. The Department of Defense is now Kwikpoint's largest customer. A DOD study found Kwikpoint to be the number one way US troops communicate with locals in Iraq and Afghanistan.In total, there are over eight million Kwikpoints in print across the globe. The United Nations and Centers for Disease Control are also Kwikpoint clients. In 20 years, they have ridden in ambulances, gone to the devastated communities of Haiti and New Orleans, and fight infectious disease such as TB and HIV in Africa.
