About Kevin W. Sexton

I am an extramurally funded surgeon-scientist with board certifications in Surgery and Clinical Informatics. I have used this expertise to create software that worked across multiple electronic medical records to predict patient complications in hospital and outpatient settings and have created medical devices designed to use venous waveforms to monitor patients. I am currently an Associate Professor at UAMS in the Department of Surgery, with secondary appointments in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health Department of Health Policy and Management, and the UAMS College of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacy Practice, Division of Pharmaceutical Evaluation and Policy (PEP).About me.I am a husband, father, surgeon, scientist, entrepreneur, and educator.I want you to be able to bring your whole self to any conversation with me. I work with people from all walks of life; not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes the team stronger. The core of my work is improving health for everyone and that means I actively seek to include everyone.I use the pronouns he/him/his and I want to know what you prefer when we talk.I love writing. I try to be thoughtful and considerate of all the words that I use.I am upbeat and enthusiastic, but I am an introvert. This takes a significant amount of effort and I sometimes struggle in large crowds. How I WorkI try my best to provide our collaboration with thoughtful, good work. I expect the same from you. I need to know if there is a barrier preventing you from this. I promise I will work with you to fix it.Be public by default. I try to be a transparent person because anything else takes too much effort. I try to work with short toes, no ego, and a low level of shame.Have a bias for action. Instead of waiting on me for a solution, move problems forward until you are stuck and then let me know the options for action and which one you think is best. This helps me have a better conversation with you about what we should do next.Document (immediately, effectively, relentlessly).Communicate. If there’s a problem, I need to know about it. I tend to interpret silence as all is well.I am fine with direct communication. I do not take offense and it helps me get to the heart of the issue. You can bring your whole self to the conversation.Work is NOT the most important thing in your life. I assume that your relationships, interests, and responsibilities outside work directly impact your happiness.

Assistant Professor

Little Rock, Ar, Us

Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Department of Biomedical Informatics, and the Department of Health Policy and Management.Physician Builder Group Lead I led a group of physicians trained as Epic physician builders through various quality improvement projects. These ranged from specialty specific projects such as peripartum data aggregation to system wide initiatives including creating a best practice advisory committee to decrease alert fatigue. Quality Officer, Surgical Specialties Service Line I performed reviews of adverse events on the surgical services offering system-based solutions to improve care. As part of my work, I led the team to champion UAMS to participate in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. I also led multiple quality improvement projects focused on standardization of practice.Trauma Quality Improvement Project Data Analysis I reviewed the semi-annual American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Project report and used the benchmarks to determine areas of improvement. I would combine the trauma registry data with our institutional data from the Arkansas Clinical Data Repository (https://ar-cdr.uams.edu/) to develop specific actions plans to minimize variations in care. This contributed to UAMS being a national leader in mortality after blunt trauma from Spring 2018 onward. Morning Report In October, 2015 I organized and led the first UAMS morning report activity for the Acute Care Surgery service at UAMS. This tradition has been carried out daily, with rare exception, since. At this educational conference we discuss all of the admissions to the trauma and emergency general surgery services in the last 24 hours. All operative cases and surgical icu transfers are also discussed. our results were published in Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Open.
