I hope this entry is easy to skim through, and/or interesting enough to read all the way through. I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great people, and have many thoughts on what work should be. After working at the same company for 7 years and leading a team of essential workers in Oregon through the first 16 months of the pandemic, I went on a sabbatical/walkabout to create the next chapter of my life and career. Through work trade, contract jobs, odd jobs, generosity, compromise, and budgeting - this intended 12 month period has lasted 2.5 years! I started with camping in National Parks, visiting friends, two weeks at a Texas llama rescue, then six weeks in the Caribbean helping dogs, a month working at a Mexican ecotourist retreat, then two months organic farming in Spain, and finished with a month in the UK doing tree work at an intentional community. Since moving back to Ohio I’ve done some consulting, carpentry, greenhouse, manual labor, and kept up volunteering. I’m grateful for this incredible period of growth, and eager to restart my career.My favorite thing about work is the team, and what we make together. I’m passionate about developing the relationship of people and process. I believe elegant workflow satisfies workers and delights customers. With the right energy and people, you can enjoy gnarly work like changing dog bandages, shoveling compost in the sun, or unloading a 53 foot truck of heavy product. My experience is defined by scaling operations and scaling culture. In my 7 years at Earth Class Mail, I grew with the company. Shipping clerk to manager to director. My team grew from 5 to 50 while maintaining an ambitious gross margin. Despite obstacles, our service was uninterrupted during the pandemic.My favorite books on work emphasize leadership sharing power with workers: The Goal, Good to Great, and Turn the Ship Around. I have formal training in Lean Management and Six Sigma methodologies, and years of experience putting them into action. There’s plenty of “what kind of worker are you” quizzes. I like Gallup’s Strengthsfinder, which lists your aptitudes. Mine are Individualization, Activator, Ideation, Arranger, and Woo. This highlights my passion for nuance. I love to learn about people, and to initiate action. I believe great teams are built by strong coaches who know their people, and know what empowers each person. Thank you for reading.
