Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Analyst
Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Analyst
Aero / Structural Engineer
- Majority of time spent working for the Turbine Aerodynamics group at Pratt & Whitney where I designed 2 vanes and 2 blades which have been produced for testing- Each component was designed by creating span wise airfoil sections that were shaped to provide the best adiabatic efficiency for that row and for the whole turbine - Turbine model was meshed and solved using a RANS model to evaluate airfoil loadings, streamlines, separation zones, TKE plots, velocity triangles, and efficiencies- Results were validated with standard monitors and 1D comparisons to meanline results - Created a design of experiments to optimize the blade tip geometry using over 300 CFD cases to model the entire design space and find the most efficient shape- Investigated various turbine configurations with transient CFD to improve performance; these include: component gapping, clocking of 2nd stage blade, and tip clearances - Created many vane blade mesh models in Star CCM+ to analyze intricate blade tip features that were setup and run with CFX- Discretely modeled film cooling holes with unique flow rates on 1st stage components- Converted Nastran model composite material components to work with LS-Dyna, then verified stiffness and weight with a modal and transient analysis-Meshed & loaded Ansys structural models from UG geometry and used results to evaluate crack propagation, low cycle fatigue, and margin of safety
Aerothermal Engineer
- Contractor for GE working on the turbine gas path stator product cost out team- Modified an iterative 1D flow network and Ansys thermal model to better match experimental data and account for new geometry & boundary conditions - Redesigned cooling holes, impingement plate, and slash face cooling to manage max metal temperatures and overall reduce cooling flow through a blade shroud by 21% - Iterated with Mechanical Design team to balance peak temperatures with life concerns- Performed multi case spallation studies to analyze the effects of TBC removal on max metal temperatures; added 1D HT hand calculations for validation- Presented findings in formal technical reviews to display progress and finalize design - Quickly became proficient in several GE proprietary software programs and Excel VBA
Process Engineering Intern
-Developed and implemented a lean level loading and procedure system to aid manufacturing teams by conducting time studies for particular products-Explored the use of new manufacturing technique called spin wielding to decrease part build times-Reorganized the manufacturing floor layout to create an efficient work flow-Designed ten manufacturing cell layouts to tailor to specific groups of products
Design Engineering Intern
-Redesigned RCCB power stud resulting in improved quality and an annual manufacturing savings of $51,000-Confirmed military spec requirements of the power stud with analytical and experimental results; these results were compiled into a write-up and presented to a group of engineers-Updated procedures and routings for redesigned power stud-Created new fixtures to increase operator efficiency by 20% using Pro Engineer; contacted outside vendors to manufacture new fixtures-Managed plant wide relabeling process on all engineering drawings to meet FAA/PMA regulations; created ECR’s and followed up with engineers to complete ECO’s-Sifted through internal databases to discover missing links between engineering parent drawings and part drawings.-Experimented with new shapes of rubber to fill hermetic switches that offered a cheaper price and were easier to use in the machine
