I am a multicultural educator practicing culturally responsive and place-based teaching in both world history surveys and upper-level electives.Most of my student life has involved social studies teachers stressing foreign language development and tutoring me through academic organizations, course centers, home visits, individualized education programs, monthly consultations, office hours, and student-led conferences. Without their insistence on meeting high academic and behavioral expectations, a double major and double minor in German, History, Philosophy, and Political Science would not have been achievable during my post-secondary education. Further caring relationships and a comparative, multi-perspective approach to the past emboldened coursework over American naval history, military revolutions, as well as war crimes, genocide and justice along the non-thesis track at graduate school. A paraprofessional with classroom experience in rural or urban communities across all grade levels and types of learning modalities, alternative teacher certifications and content area tests demonstrate competency of the subject matter and knowledge regarding instructional strategies, classroom management, and educational technology. Besides learning to become a reflective teacher, my previous assignments motivate me to deliver targeted instruction for English Language Learners, accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities, acceleration and enrichment for gifted and talented students, and interventions and supports for students with behavioral challenges. This fieldwork punctuates the mounting demand for instructors to honor the individuality, diversity, and uniqueness of a student body concerned with exploring and constructing their personal and cultural identities. We therefore need curriculum reform that not only more closely aligns with the personalized learning found in the structure of the professional historianship, but also shifts the focus onto context-rich problems and problem-based historical inquiry.
