Developed a fluorescence microscopy method to track the movement of nanoparticles during the cure of an epoxy based thermoset. The method was used to track and study the preferential accumulation of nanoparticles at carbon and glass fiber surfaces in the presence of a thermoplastic "migrating agent." Characterizing the quality of the interphase was confirmed with SEM, and the mechanical properties were investigated using a mechanical load frame, and the single fiber fragmentation technique.Genetic engineering of E. Coli to produce modified proteins containing large zwitterionic peptide blocks. Zwitterionic molecules and polymers have been shown to, in some cases, increase the stability of proteins without significant decreases in catalytic activity. Direct expression of the protein with a zwitterionic segment was theorized to improve the protein's stability.
