About Kyle Carpenter
Physicist whose Ph.D. research focused on plasma spectroscopic modeling and data analysis for high-energy-density plasma experiments - results were presented and scientific conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. I have experience in programming, both for computational modeling and data analysis (C, Python, and R) and have a background with a variety of optimization and statistical analysis techniques including genetic algorithms, multi-objective optimization, Monte-Carlo simulations, and bootstrapping. I am also have experience in designing and executing experiments at large laser facilities like Omega and the National Ignition Facility.
Listed skills include Experimental Physics, Computational Physics, Atomic Spectroscopy, Atomic Physics, and 1 others.

Postdoctoral Researcher
I have two primary roles in my current position:1.) Scientific lead for the Direct Laser Impulse platform at LLNL's National Ignition Facility - As the scientific lead, I am involved in the design and execution of direct laser impulse experiments at the National Ignition Facility. As part of my role, I communicate with external users and internal groups to keep users informed of the facility's status and capabilities and keep internal groups up to date on user's request and needs.2.) Physicist: X-ray source development and applications - Conduct experiments at laser facilities like the National Ignition Facility and Omega at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics dedicated to x-ray source development and applications.
Graduate Research Assistant
My graduate research was focused on using plasma spectroscopy to understand the laser heating process in Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion. I coupled a physics model to a multi-objective, non-linear least squares algorithm do analyze spectroscopic data and extract 2D temperature distributions from laser-produced plasmas. These results revealed how the inclusion of an external magnetic field impacts the laser-heating process and enabled detailed comparisons with radiation magnetohydrodynamics simulations.Additionally, I performed atomic kinetics simulations of the plasmas to create synthetic data in order to validate the analysis methodology and to test the sensitivity of the results to the atomic model, radiation transport, and experimental noise. My physics model, non-linear least squares minimization routine, and spectrum fitting routines were written in C. I also wrote some data processing scripts in R to characterize the noise in our data - iterative re-weighted least squares, Savitzky-Golay filtering, and Kolmogorov Smirnov test.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
As a teaching assistant I was required to run several sections of the undergraduate physics (mechanics and electricity and magnetism) labs each semester. The laboratory sections met once per week to perform experiments that supplemented the material covered in the lecture portion of the course. Each week I prepared a lecture that described the physics relevant to the upcoming laboratory exercise and I demonstrated how to properly perform the experiment. Students submitted lab reports at the end of each session which had to be graded and returned the following week. Other responsibilities included making minor repairs to the laboratory equipment and holding weekly office hours to assist students with questions regarding the weeks laboratory exercise.
