My family and I were stationed in Turkey for this tour. I managed all aspects of clinical operations in the dental clinic and also personally provided high-quality comprehensive dental care for all active duty and family members located at this base. We elevated our customer service, and our patient satisfaction soared to 99.1%. I produced dental care valued at $360,000. I was honored to be the Junior Clinical Dentist of the Year in 2008. We were reassigned after completing a standard 2-year tour in Turkey.

At Lackland Air Force Base, I completed a very challenging 2-year Comprehensive Dentistry Residency. We were taught by every type of dental specialist, and trained to be able to provide care without specialists in remote locations. This is where my clinical knowledge, skills and abilities were enhanced significantly. I was assigned to Incirlik Air Base in Turkey after graduation.

Since we missed the comradery and lifestyle, my family and I decided to rejoin the Air Force and our first assignment (as a dentist) was a familiar one, Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. In my first year, I was promoted to be the assistant manager and I was recognized for being an, “energetic team player” with “unsurpassed people skills”. We left when I was selected for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

As a newly licensed general dentist, I provided dental care for a primarily migrant farmworker population in Fort Morgan Colorado. This was an extremely rewarding experience. Despite the fact that many of my patients did not speak English (and I did not speak Spanish), we learned to communicate effectively with key words, smiles and hugs. Although I enjoyed this position, we missed the Air Force family.
