Currently I work as a Bridge Engineer and the Construction Services/Alternate Delivery Project Manager at Verdantas, LLC (Formerly Borton-Lawson Engineering) in Wilkes-Barre, PA. I am heavily involved in many Design-Build projects and contractor alternate designs. Although my focus is on the construction services/design-build aspect of my job, I am still involved in structural design. Daily responsibilities include structural design of all aspects of highway infrastructure including: abutments, piers, concrete decks, P/S concrete beams, steel girders & elements, bearings, sound barrier walls, retaining walls (prefabricated modular, MSE, etc...), and a variety of other structures.Contractor focused construction services and alternate designs are something that I have been heavily involved with over the last 10+ years. I take pride in knowing that I have provided the most cost effective, real world solution for the contractors that we work with on a daily basis. Whether that solution is simply economizing shoring designs to limit the amount of material used and manpower required, or simply finding a better way to get the job done and the structure constructed. Below is a summary of some of the services I have been involved with:Support of Excavation (Soldier pile and lagging/ steel sheet piling are common. Also included within this service are grouted anchors, struts, wale beams, connection designs, etc...), barrier false-work, under deck shielding, crane sizing/placement, beam erection plans and demolition plans. Below are some jobs I have been involved with:Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission - ABC Superstructure Replacement at milepost A-58.88Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) project with JD Eckman. Using a combination of 3D scanning technology, 3D software and modified construction material properties, the JD Eckman/Borton-Lawson team was able to replace the entire superstructure of this mainline Turnpike structure in under 55 hours (from start of detour to traffic opening).PennDOT District 5-0 - SR 2017 (Gibraltar Rd) over the Schuylkill RiverContractor designed, alternate design of a 6-span Next Beam superstructure replacement to a 6-span PA Bulb-Tee Beam superstructure replacement.PennDOT District 2-0 - SR 220 (Auction Road) Alternate Design with HRI, Inc.As-designed three-span structure to single span. Integral abutments with PA Bulb-Tee Beams. Rapid Bridge Replacement Project (P3)JV 188 - SR 0940 over Paradise CreekJV-190 - SR 2009 over Pocono CreekJV-191JV-149JV-139 JV-144JV-184JV-141JV-207

Recent work I have been involved with includes:Bridge B10 final design for the South Valley Parkway. This new construction integral abutment bridge has a 150' span and seven 33x71 PA Bulb-Tee beams and carries SR 2008 over SR 29.Involved in the alternate design of 3-span steel structure carrying SR220 over SR2008. The bridge team and myself were able to eliminate the 2 proposed piers by using a 33x69 PA Bulb-Tee while still maintaining required under-clearance. This allowed this new construction project to save over a 1 million dollars in construction costs. Borton-Lawson teamed with Cottle's Asphalt & Maintenance Dual super structure replacement on SR 81. 3-span steel super structure utilized the existing substructure. Time line was a major concern with this project, so care was taken to ensure construction could be completed within the short timeline given by the department. Precast concrete deck sections with steel grid reinforcing were used utilized to help with this issue. This project finished ahead of the 45 day construction schedule.Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Retaining Walls realignment for the Lansdale I-476 widening project with Allan Myers. This project involved the realignment of 8 different MSE walls to allow the contractor to dispose of additional fill and avoid costly trucking of the fill off site. Due to the complexity of this project, a great deal of coordination with the owner/contractor/sub consultants was necessary to get this project completed. In addition to the MSE wall realignment, there was additional work including sound barrier wall design involved on this project.With all of the projects in construction, there is large need for construction services which include designs of support of excavation, demo plans and erection plans. Support of excavation designs often times include the design of Soldier piles and lagging, steel sheet piling, walers, struts, grouted anchors, deadmen and connections.
