From May 2012 to December 2012, I was privileged to be a part of an extensive study of an invasive species, Centaurea stoebe, in Long Island, NY and further upstate in the Adirondack Mountains. Intense field and lab work was conducted and the experience I received was invaluable to me, as it gave me a foray into large-scale scientific research and what that entails. Twelve-hour field days, working as a team, being able to actively contribute to the project with my own ideas, conducting data entry, seed viability experiments and analysis were among the many skills I was able to hone. The research done this summer and in the coming months will be published and that paper will utilizing a combination of field and modeling techniques to determine how environmental niche and host plant biomass and quality affect the coexistence and local distribution of two specialist herbivores introduced as biocontrol of the spotted knapweed of North America.
