I’m a problem solver. I’ve been designing bulk material equipment for about six years now, and I’ve come to enjoy finding solutions to problems. This includes large pieces of equipment with bulky drives and supports that require further analysis to ensure they can hold up to all of the loads in the intended environment. At KWS, I pioneered the use of finite element analysis and frame analysis available in the design software being used, Autodesk Inventor. Also, my help in the development of smart parts and corresponding design and drawing standards has allowed designers to quickly and continually produce large numbers of drawings on a case by case basis as needed for projects and standardize parts for reuse on future projects or individual part sales. In regards to drawing work, attention to detail was critical for managing the design detailing process, and double checking every drawing detail was necessary to prevent issues in manufacturing, installation, and operation. As a project manager, I was continually solving problems both in the field and in manufacturing. In the field, designing around obstructions or interfacing with upstream and downstream equipment were the most common requirements. Communication with customers, engineering firms, contractors and suppliers was key to integrating our equipment into the overall system. Knowing the fundamentals behind the electric motors, variable frequency drives, pneumatics, hydraulics, airlocks, sensors, control panels, and other interfacing technologies was paramount to a successful design. The manufacturability of the design was also important, and coordination at the earliest stages of the design was key to ensure ease of implementation. This includes coordinating with various manufacturing supervisors on machining, fabricating, or welding of parts, including making the jigs necessary to improve efficiency and hold tolerances. Also in the shop, I was most often present at the assembly stage at which I would be involved in ensuring all of the components came together and functioned properly. After shipping and installation of the equipment, some projects would require start-up and training to ensure the equipment operated safely and properly long term.Overall, working at KWS was one of the best experiences of my career. In combination with my education in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, I have become a well rounded engineer and will continue applying my knowledge and experience in my next endeavors, wherever they may lead. Thank you for your time and interest.
