About Kyle Legate

I am a Canadian with international experience in basic biological research. I received my PhD in Hamilton, Canada before completing two postdoctoral fellowships in Munich, Germany. After more than 18 years in research I decided to leverage my scientific knowledge and insatiable curiosity into a new career as a professional scientific editor. I relocated to London, UK in 2013 to join Nature Communications when it was still a “small” journal of around 15 editors. I was hired for my expertise in cell biology but handled manuscripts in other areas of the biological sciences as well. Only three months after becoming promoted to Senior Editor I was promoted to Team Manager, where I oversee the biotechnology, computational biology and plant biology content of the journal. More information on this role can be found under the relevant Experience tab.I am a driven and collaborative individual with a voracious intellectual appetite. I enjoy learning about science and am talented in assimilating a large amount of complex material and ideas and distilling them down into easier to digest take-home messages. Although I am not intimidated by detail I think of myself as a big picture person, and am enjoying developing the big picture through my daily work. As an editor I am exposed to a much wider scientific world than I was as a researcher and as a team manager I am exposed to an even wider world than I was as a handling editor. I enjoy what I do very much, but I am also open to the possibility of fresh challenges.

As a manuscript handling editor I was responsible for reading and evaluating manuscripts covering all aspects of cell biology; tissue, cellular and molecular biophysics; biological methods including microfluidics, imaging and the development of biosensors. This was a collaborative project between the University Clinic Munich at Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) and the Department of Applied Physics at the LMU. The project involved studying the biophysics of cell adhesion of primary mouse T cells and the dependence on the signaling molecule sphingosine 1-phosphate. Key technologies employed were FACS and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

This project investigated the role of phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate 5-kinase gamma (PIPKIg) in mouse physiology, with a special focus on cell adhesion. To achieve this I made and analysed two mouse models, the first lacking PIPKIg entirely, and the second lacking an exon that targeted PIPKIg to sites of cell matrix adhesion. The technical skills needed to complete this project included mouse husbandry, mouse anatomy and physiology, cell biology, biophysics (AFM), lipid and protein biochemistry and molecular biology.As the only native English speaker in the Department of Molecular Medicine I was also the author or co-author of numerous review articles in prestigious journals.
