Effective management of industry genetic selection programs whilst abalone are grown out in the platforms.Employee management: Take responsibility for the motivation and subsequent performance of all employees working on the ongrowing production platforms, split stations as well as in the Basket department.Planning: Identify production targets, develop short-term and long-term plans to achieve these targets, and monitor actual performance versus these plans.Financial management: Using agreed budget as a guideline, ensure that due diligence is applied to spending and that critical cost-benefit thinking is applied at all times. Information management: Ensure that accurate production data (and other relevant data) is generated and routinely analysed to determine production trends and increase understanding of stock performance trends.Basket management: Through the effective cleaning and repairs of old baskets, and the manufacturing of high quality new baskets, ensure that the production processes of splitting and grading are never interrupted.Continuous improvement: Actively pursue innovative ways to improve existing abalone farming husbandry practices, infrastructure and process management in order to ultimately boost profitability.

Management and co-ordination of all of the necessary animal husbandry for animals that are transferred from the Nursery for roughly 600t of abalone. The co-ordination and human resource support of four Senior Supervisors and their teams of roughly 24 people each. The co-ordination and maintenance of all HACCP, Biosecurity and Hygiene compliance in the Grow-out area. The cultivation manangement of 13 Ulva ponds and their production.

To plan and carry out conservation based activities, so as to maintain and develop a conservation ethic along the Breede River Estuary and surrounds in accordance with agreed Conservation Guidelines especially within the Municipal SLA.1. Develop and maintain a law enforcement strategy for the area. 2. Conduct regular patrols by boat, vehicle and on foot to ensure compliance with all environmental legislation by observation, prosecutions and visible policing.3. Monitor and check fishing activities at all slipways and landing sites and along the coast.4. Submit monthly reports to MANCO by the 5th of each month5. Monitor and report on all activities along the river and provide relevant management information. 6. Assist the Conservator with relevant monitoring and recording of data and work with LBRCT monitoring staff.7. Liaise and attend meetings with other conservation organizations necessary to perform duties and aid conservation and organizational development. Represent the LBRCT at field level at these meetings and build up a network of useful contacts.8. Organize, attend and represent the LBRCT at special functions and other important days related to conservation.9. Attend training and develop relevant to knowledge and skills. 10. Keep abreast of latest happenings along the entire catchment and coast and also of latest developments in conservation.

Port Alfred

Comprehensive masters by thesis based on the replacement of fishmeal in commercial aquafeeds for abalone (Haliotis midae). This study is a continuation of previous research projects initiated by Rhodes University into the development of artificial feeds for the abalone H. midae. The primary aim of the present study is to determine whether H. midae can assimilate LysipearlTM (Kemin products), and whether the species’ quantitative requirement can be determined by feeding graded levels of LysipearlTM in a semi purified diet. This research has been conducted at the Rhodes University Marine Research Laboratory, based in Port Alfred. This facility is a fully functional recirculating aquaculture system, accommodating both abalone (H. midae) and dusky kob (Argyrosomous japonicus). My time spent at the Lab has allowed me to achieve practical experience in system design (building of a small recirculating fin fish system) as well as ongoing maintenance and management of a small scale aquaculture operation.
