Leadership, Optimization, Coachability. These three professional skills/interests are the ones I find myself the most passionate and focused on. It is because of my focus on these three skills that I have found success in most professional scenarios I have been faced with. Below, I will briefly describe why they have been so important for me.LeadershipI believe that leadership is a choice. Sometimes, we will describe someone as a "natural-born leader," which can be true, but this does not diminish a person's ability to become a leader. Leadership requires emotional intelligence, strong communication skills, and a desire to see those around you flourish. These are areas that I have studied and practiced, both professionally and personally, and it will be a lifelong pursuit for me. Professionally, my most valuable leadership experience has come in volunteer work at my church. I have lead various groups of people, ranging in age from 20 to 80. One example is of a class that I taught for several months, in which I studied for several weeks before presenting my findings to 20-30 people on a Sunday morning. This often lead into discussion and answering tough questions.OptimizationI have found that there is often a quicker and better way to accomplish a task than what is currently being done. I live my life under this principle, and I am constantly unsatisfied with tasks that seem to contain wasted time. This has been evident in my role with Grand Canyon Education. This position rewards optimization. I often find myself pausing to plan a course of action, and it leads to my completion of tasks much quicker than anticipated. This has also left me with time to ponder what other things could be done to increase efficiency for my entire department, and I have been able to suggest some of these ideas to coworkers who found them useful.CoachabilityMost people would not consider this a skill, but it is. In fact, I see coachability as the most important skill that a professional can possess. It requires a person to be humble and listen to feedback. Without coachability, I would not be who I am today. I recognize that no matter my accomplishments, there will always be someone to learn from. This was most evident for me as a car salesman. During this time, I averaged $50,000 a month in gross profit for Power Buick and GMC. This was well above average, and I attribute this success to simply listening to those around me with more experience. Had I ignored their advise, I would have found myself unprepared for many situations that I faced.
