Nasa Idaho Space Grant Robotic Lunar Exploration Program FellowNasa Ames Research Center Jun 2013 - May 2015Moffett Field, California, UsInterned in the Intelligent Robotics Group at NASA Ames, during the summers of 2013 and 2014. My work involved simulating collisions between a spherical tensegrity structure (an experimental robotic vehicle) and the ground to determine the structure's ability to reduce impact forces on a payload of scientific instruments. For this purpose I modified an Euler Lagrange based simulator written in Python. The results indicated the system could function as a planetary lander. This work served as the foundation for a capstone design project for engineering undergraduates at the University of Idaho.Other projects from my summers at NASA included: feasibility studies for generating wind power on a tensegrity structure, feasibility studies regarding spherical tensegrity locomotion by actuating a central payload (which also lead to a capstone design project at the University of Idaho), and design and construction of a tested for a twisted string actuator.During the school year I mentored undergraduate engineers in their senior design projects for NASA at the University of Idaho and facilitated communication between the engineers at NASA Ames and the students. -
Fluids Research AssistantUniversity Of Idaho Nov 2012 - Feb 2013Moscow, Id, UsSimulated the pressure rise in a penstock under various conditions that resulted in a water hammer surge. This model was based on a finite difference method. This gave project engineers parameters for their design of the penstock for a renewable energy application. I also created a visualization in MATLAB of the surge to enhance the engineers' understanding of the problem. -
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate ResearcherUniversity Of South Carolina May 2012 - Jul 2012Columbia, Sc, UsCharacterized the mechanical properties of the synthetic biomaterial Polyethylene Glycol Diacrylate. I used these properties to model the biomaterial with the FEA tools available in COMSOL. I designed and assembled a test fixture to compress the biomaterial and measure the load applied to the biomaterial in the confines of a laser scanning confocal microscope. This project supported ongoing research into vasculogenesis, (blood vessel formation) an important topic in regenerative medicine. The research was funded by the NSF.
