Although the internship was just for the summer, the people that I met and the skills I learned from them will last a lifetime. While at Oak Ridge National Lab I had the opportunity to work on the following projects,1.) Research self-forming SmartMesh IP networks for monitoring lightwater nuclear reactors. - In charge of designing and documenting test cases for the network nodes which involved power testing, determining power consumption before and after the various stages of the network forming process as well as during normal operations. We wanted to see if the devices were able to be used in a self sustainable environment making use of solar harvesting. - Testing overall functionality of the self forming network such as out of range and max number of nodes limits and comparing these limits to the manufacturers suggestions. - Communicating with the manufacturer of the devices on any found bugs or documentation issues.2.) Signal Analysis Software in Matlab - In charge of designing an application to convert known signal analysis practices in Labview to Matlab. - Met with the engineer at least twice a week to discuss design criteria and any problems that were encountered. - Designed, developed, and tested the user interface (GUI) in Matlab. - Wrote documentation on how to use the application, lessons learned, and how to extend the application if needed. Also, I was able to visit many seminars which covered topics such as the latest advancements in robotics, particle physics, and super computing.
Student
