In the fall of 2018, I decided to pursue a full-time career as a small business owner, opening a BBQ restaurant just outside of the Des Moines Metro area. The business opened in June of 2019 and sales grew on an average of 9.25% annually over the four years of my ownership. Over those years, I successfully navigated the business landscape of COVID-19 while developing a customer base, and managed a staff of 12 employees—handling scheduling, HR and payroll. During this time, I catered events with 200+ attendants, booked live music acts and developed a training program for new employees. As a small business owner, I developed and honed skills in time management—ensuring day-to-day operations ran smoothly, engagement— building positive relationships with employees and community members and leadership— encouraging company growth and opportunities.In spring 2023, I sold my business and embarked on a new path, returning to school to study software development with a focus on Python. Combining my entrepreneurial background with newfound joy for programming, I now develop automation code for a federal contractor specializing in loans.
