Systems Engineer

Mro Supply Chain & Manufacturing Intern

Lafayette, Indiana, United States

The summer after my junior year of university, I worked at GE Aerospace at the Lafayette Engine Facility in Lafayette, Indiana. During my internship, I created a partially automated Smartsheet tracker to manage the engine material taken off the engines in the MRO department. This tracker helped to facilitate and expedite the handling of engine material by the Materials Review Board (MRB). Along with the partially automated Smartsheet tracker, I was able to develop the standard work for how to handle the material, creating floor mapping to improve organization of the material. Another task I took on was designing and producing foam kitting for the LEAP 1A & 1B engine modules to streamline the assembly processes for manufacturing. Furthermore, I developed the standard work for managing the material that goes into these foam kits to accurately keep track of supply through SAP. Through this project I was able to hone my AutoCAD drawing skills. Concurrently, I was able to utilize Autodesk Inventor CAD software to design a streamlined storage device to alleviate the need for the full disassembly of the low pressure turbine (LPT) nozzles. This design aims to reduce the amount of space the LPT nozzles would take up when they were removed from the engine while also making it easier for the technicians to reassemble the engine. Overall, I have gained much valuable experience in the aerospace industry further honing my technical skills such as 3D modeling, statistical analysis, and process development as well as further improving upon my teamworking and communication skills.

Product Engineering Intern

La Porte, Indiana, United States

The summer after my sophomore year of university, I worked at Howmet Aerospace in the casting plant in LaPorte, Indiana. During my internship, I created a data analysis tool utilizing Excel expediting the dimensional analysis of the stators produced in order to determine the specific product requirements that were dimensionally deviant. I also designed a setter using NX to alleviate warping issues that were previously observed for a particular part produced. This setter is intended to hold the part in its desired shape to prevent the observed warping. Another task I took on was creating a capabilities study using Excel and the six-sigma analysis method to analyze the potential dimensional accuracy of a part utilizing a specific manufacturing process. My main day-to-day tasks included collaborating with team members to analyze the dimensional accuracy of parts utilizing blue light scans and CMM data to determine the appropriate rework plan to fix deviations. I also itemized blueprints for various stators to determine an effective layout to analyze the dimensional accuracy of the parts. Overall, I have gained much valuable experience in the aerospace industry gaining technical skills such as 3D modeling, statistical analysis, and itemizing blueprints as well as further honing my teamworking skills.
