I Wish For Change: Unleashing the Power of Kids to Make a Difference (2019)I Wish My Teache Knew: How One Question Can Change Everything For Our Kids (2016)One day, third-grade teacher Kyle Schwartz asked her students to fill–in–the–blank in this sentence: “I wish my teacher knew _____.” The results astounded her. Some answers were humorous, others were heartbreaking–all were profoundly moving and enlightening. The results opened her eyes to the need for educators to understand the unique realities their students face in order to create an open, safe and supportive place in the classroom. When Schwartz shared her experience online, #IWishMyTeacherKnew became an immediate worldwide viral phenomenon. Schwartz’s book tells the story of #IWishMyTeacherKnew, including many students’ emotional and insightful responses, and ultimately provides an invaluable guide for teachers, parents, and communities.

My students completed a simple and powerful sentence: "I wish my teacher knew _." Their responses have begun a conversation about the realities that children face when they come to school and the importance of building community with in our classrooms. As a distinguished teacher I use effective instructional practices and relationship building to accelerate the learning in my classroom. A particular focus is on using technology to differentiate instruction, especially for those students who are learning English. Our classroom strives to focus on growing as learners through rigorous work and and critical thinking so we can solve real problems and serve our community.

I developed strong instructional practices under the mentorship of a distinguished lead teacher. I supported students through sheltered language instruction and data driven differentiation.

Though a joint effort of the United Nations Development Fund and the Chilean Ministry of Education, I instructed students from 5th grade through 12th grade in English language and lead extra-curricular learning opportunities such as adult English classes and English Club while also coaching students to compete in debate tournaments and speaking competitions leading to awards and scholarships.
