After 6 months of being a Full-Stack Developer, I was promoted to Development Team Lead. This was in recognition of not only my ability to code but also to communicate with the people outside of the team, helping our team to set expectations within and outside the business and help us deliver quality products in time.I am currently leading one of 2 agile teams. The team is currently a team of 6 developers and 1 QA resource. I am also responsible for working with the product team on behalf of my agile team, helping work through product backlogs and set expectations/timelines for delivery.I also work with the Development Manager and Technical Lead to determine the overall architecture of our solution and how our services interact together.

While in my previous roles as a QA resource, in my own time I had been learning to code. Eventually this allowed me to switch roles in the business to become a full-stack developer.When I first changed roles I was mainly focused on our backend as that was were we lacked resource. I started off mainly focused in PHP using the Symfony framework and supporting the corresponding infrastructure that we had hosted in AWS. After a while I extended my reach out to our frontend and middle layer APIs which are written in Ember.js and Node.js (with Express) respectively. These codebases are also served from AWS.I was a member of the development team working an Agile process with standard 2 week sprints.

After the development team grew to more people, we brought in some more QA resource to help us get more features and bug fixes through to our end customers. In addition to the duties of my previous role, I was also given the responsibility of mentoring our Junior QA resource and helping them along with their development. This resource was also in charge of technical support for customer service; any queries that they were unable to answer from customers were passed along to us as the QA team, and we helped diagnose, debug and fix issues. Any issues that were too large to tackle as hotfixes were prioritised by us and the product team to deliver value to our customers as fast and to the highest quality possible.I was also in charge of the overall test strategy for the business - mainly on our long term automation approach as we scaled out and moved more towards a microservice architecture. I developed my own test harness that allowed us to automate API tests for various APIs across the services.

When I first joined realestate.co.nz I was the only QA resource in the business. As part of my role I was required to test all of the code being written by developers while we were both supporting the current product and developing new ones. I developed test strategies and artifacts to help the business see what we were working on and what kind of coverage we were getting through testing. I was also in charge of creating all high level test plans for the various projects we had going on. I consulted with the Head of Technology while writing these plans to make sure that timelines and estimates for various projects included adequate time for both function and non-functional testing.

At VMob I was a part of the test team, mainly on the operations side and also the mobile SDK team.As we grew, the test team was overhauling our QA process to make it more scalable than it was when we were a smaller start up. I was part of the group helping to lead this change, particularly in the process side of things.My responsibilities included the following:- Leading the mobile SDK testing team and being responsible for quality releases- Leading any testing activities required for queries raised by customers- Assuring quality in deployments to client staging and production environments- Supporting the operations team in debugging various customer queries.- Overall responsible for quality of released versions of the product.
