Started out with RallyHealth before being squired by Optum/United Health Care in Summer 2022.Lead project to allow managers to onboard new hires for all engineering via simple github yaml updates. Saved my department 5000 access grant and revoke tickets per year.Moved department to Atlantis running on Kubernetes from random local lap runs of Terraform with no audit capabilities and prone to random locking and version conflicts.Stabilized several old Splunk servers and made run books for other teams to maintain these systems.Data mined and processed several sources of AWS cost and tagging. Found ways to save the company 500,000 a month and catorized the mystery of what team was spending the bulk of the bill.Lead database team from old chef systems to ansible and terraform to create stable and repeatable builds of mongo.Setup AWS SSM and taught developers how to access infrastructure with it, replacing old SSH access.

Lead efforts to improve graphing (Grafana/Graphite), alerting (Nagios) and logging for key proxy systems used by core developers product. Drastically improved on boarding process for new hires. Changed daily stand up meeting processes (scrum-ish), agendas and flow to give team more time to work. Taught team members Docker, Ansible and Jenkins. Automated DNS to the point that developers could safely make updates in Jenkins without my teams involvement. Setup Packer builds so from scratch templates can be used instead of copying the last one used template around in VMWare. Due to old architecture and conflicts of packages, moved many process to use Docker.

Leads team effort to create highly available and scalable websites for public libraries and large municipal clients in Drupal on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Creates an easy-to-run bootstrap script to setup a developer’s local system in minutes to have the full stack of Docker containers running and developer ready to code. Automates setup of new clients and additional servers with Ansible to reduce time and prevent human errors. Audits web logs to determine tweaks to Nginx and Varnish to improve cache hit ratio. Integrated scripts into Slack to help quickly determine when a change in load happens, what actions to take next without digging for data, and Consul to help add bans and whitelists to Varnish to help add another layer of security to our web apps. Use Cloudflare rules for larger clients to save bandwidth costs and prevent DDoS attacks. Help to maintain d4m-nfs open source project to greatly speed up Docker for Mac. Use letsencrypt to ensure all clients are able to do full HTTPS for free. All client’s websites are well above 99.99% uptime. Working as a full time, 100% remote employee, working with co-workers across North America.

Briefly worked with Chef across multiple types of environments before converting all automation to Ansible. Continue to work on deliverability strategies in the ever-changing world of mass market email. Between my automated code rollout process and the development team processes I put in place (see previous experience below), I am no longer needed to directly supervise rollouts as the process is so simple. Code is out in production in 30 seconds with 2 simple shell arguments. Converted Drupal single install sites to multisite. Dabbled with Varnish and Wordpress on Nginx. Setup Wordpress version control rollout process for multiple Wordpress environments (per odd client requirements). Taught new hire in another department enough Unix to do the jobs of 3 people. Assumed system admin role after only systems person left. Main person on call 24x7. Implemented Agile practices with team and started to grow team Stateside (see previous experience below). Soon had all responsibilities for Application performance and production tasks. Moved servers to the cloud at Softlayer. Upgraded to Symfony 1.3 and git control. Implemented Code review procedures and unit testing. Researched and setup Watir and resettable GUI’s for functional testing by QA team. Also lead operations team member and learned to see the code side and server side effects of an ever-changing environment. Developed systems for backend queuing system so client admins would be queued to prevent clobbering of system, as well as a way for clients to make groups based on any criteria in our system with a web GUI. In charge of getting PCI level 1 compliant. 

Also became responsible for deliverability of all emails sent out of system with PMTA Port25. Created procedures for new client take ons and education, DNS setups, warming of IPs, email list hygiene and IP pooling. Quickly took inbox placement from 50% up to 90%. Added the ability to easily sample a small part of a new clients list to ensure lists were clean to send to.

First Stateside employee for the sister company of IS7 (see experience below). Worked full time as a programmer and gave directions to 2 others. Built a mailing and donation taking application in Symfony 1.1 in a LAMP environment. Code was maintained in svn. Began to write Unix scripts to help aide with tedious server tasks.

Agency business with a majority of non-profit clients, which required finding the best tool for the client while working as efficiently as possible. Worked heavily with the Convio Platform, Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal. Wrote PHP and Shell scripts to normalize donor transaction data to MySQL for custom reporting. Created large scale PHP project that allowed client to create online forms for sub-administrators to answer and allowed front end users to search online database. Utilized Photoshop designs to cut valid, cross-platform/browser compatible HTML/CSS for web-pages and email.

Mailing shop that specialized in creating custom insurance packets and tracking of return mail leads. Imported external vendor data with PHP scripts to PostgreSQL and converted insurance documents from various sources to PostScript. Maintained and upgraded PHP scripts to generate insurance packets. Updated error checking processes which reduced the data entry time from 4+ hours a day to less then one hour. Made several complex tasks more simple and web driven (instead of command line) to enable non-programmers the ability to manage tasks.
