Originally from Placentia, CA, Kyle Ukes (b.1987) is finishing his senior year as a College of Creative Studies music composition major and sociocultural linguistics minor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was accepted into the prestigious College of Creative Studies program as a freshman and has been under the compositional guidance of Dr. Jeremy Haladyna and Dr. Joel Feigin during his time as an undergraduate. In addition to composing, Kyle also enjoys conducting both as a live conductor and as a studio conductor. During his undergraduate career, many of the top large and small ensembles at UCSB such as the University Orchestra, the University Wind Ensemble and the Ensemble for Contemporary Music have performed and/or read his pieces. Kyle is very proud to have a multitude of works in his repertory including two full-length musicals, four symphonic band pieces, and others. In fact, his portfolio for his Junior Jury in Composition contained over four-hundred pages of music. His compositions have awarded him five scholarships in “music compositional excellence” for his large ensemble, small ensemble, and vocal works. His music is highly influenced by the romantic and expressionistic philosophies and composers. He considers himself to be a neo-romantic composer and considers writing music to be a way of emotionally connecting with a perfect stranger at the deepest human level. Kyle plans to go on to Graduate school and achieve either a Masters of Arts (MA) or a Masters of Music (MM) in Music Composition and Theory. Kyle hopes to make a living as a Full-Time composer working in the industry. He also hopes to become an activist for keeping the Arts in California education. Outside of music, Kyle has written a thirty-page honors thesis in sociocultural linguistics and enjoys helping animals, hanging out with friends, reading Steven King novels, and watching South Park.Specialties: Film, Musicals, Minimalism, Large Ensemble Works, Orchestration/Arranging, Conducting.
